Overview of Project Engineer - Machine Design

A Project Engineer in Machine Design leads the design, development, and validation of mechanical systems, custom machinery, and production equipment. The role blends engineering expertise with project management to deliver high-quality mechanical solutions that improve performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

Key Responsibilities

Machine Design Engineering

  • Design, develop, and validate mechanical systems, assemblies, and custom production equipment
  • Develop detailed CAD models, engineering drawings, and perform FEA/stress analysis
  • Conduct design reviews, tolerance analysis, and feasibility studies for mechanical concepts
  • Oversee fabrication, assembly, and validation of mechanical equipment and tooling
  • Ensure systems comply with safety standards

 Project Management

  • Lead machine design projects from concept through deployment, including scope, schedule, and budget management
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams: mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, and external integrators
  • Prepare project documentation: functional specifications, risk assessments, FAT/SAT protocols, and change orders
  • Track project milestones, identify risks, and implement corrective actions

 Technical Support & Continuous Improvement

  • Provide on-site support during system build
  • Analyze field and production data to identify machine design improvement opportunities

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering field preferred
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical design, GD&T, material selection, and machine component design
  • Understanding of machine design, sensors, pneumatics, motion control, and industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, DeviceNet)
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and P&IDs
  • Analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in fast-paced manufacturing environments
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing and Six Sigma principles
