What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manufacturing Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manufacturing Process Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, process optimization, and quality control, typically supported by a degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering. Proficiency with CAD software, Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing methodologies, and familiarity with ERP systems are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and drive process improvements. These competencies are crucial for increasing efficiency, reducing costs, and ensuring product quality in competitive manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by manufacturing process engineers when implementing process improvements?

Manufacturing process engineers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from production teams, balancing cost constraints with quality improvements, and integrating new technologies into existing workflows. They must also ensure that process modifications do not disrupt ongoing production or compromise safety standards. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential for gaining buy-in from stakeholders and successfully implementing changes.

What is manufacturing process engineering?

Manufacturing process engineering is a specialized field focused on designing, analyzing, and improving the processes used to produce goods in factories or plants. Process engineers develop efficient methods for transforming raw materials into finished products, often working to optimize quality, cost, and productivity. Their responsibilities include selecting equipment, designing workflows, troubleshooting production issues, and implementing new technologies. Ultimately, their goal is to ensure manufacturing operations run smoothly, safely, and efficiently.

Job description

Description:

The Process Engineer is responsible for developing and maintaining manufacturing processes used to produce custom metal retail displays and store fixtures. This role focuses on creating and maintaining Bills of Materials (BOMs) and manufacturing routings within the Global Shop ERP system to support production planning and execution.

Working closely with engineering, estimating, production, and supply chain teams, the Process Engineer ensures new retail display programs transition efficiently from prototype to fabrication, finishing, and final assembly. This position plays an important role in process planning, workflow optimization, and manufacturing documentation across a high-mix custom fabrication environment.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop manufacturing routings and Bills of Material for new retail display programs using the Global Shop ERP system.
  • Review engineering drawings and CAD models to ensure design for manufacturability.
  • Identify efficient fabrication methods and material utilization strategies.
  • Collaborate with estimating and production teams to establish manufacturing plans.
  • Support the transition of new programs from engineering to production.
  • Define manufacturing workflows including fabrication, finishing, and assembly operations.
  • Provide general process knowledge across:

* Laser / CNC cutting

* Press brake forming

* Resistance and MIG welding

* Powder coating

* Packaging and final assembly

Database and Engineering Change Management

  • Maintain accurate manufacturing data within the ERP system
  • Process engineering changes (ECOs)
  • Maintain file control and revision management for engineering drawings
  • Ensure BOM and routing consistency across manufacturing programs
Requirements:

Education

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Industrial Technology, or a related field preferred. Relevant manufacturing experience may be considered in place of formal education.

Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in manufacturing, process engineering, or production planning.
  • Experience working in metal fabrication, sheet metal, or welded assemblies preferred.
  • Experience working with ERP systems and BOM / routing development.

Technical Skills

  • Familiarity with CAD software
  • Strong attention to detail and data accuracy
  • Strong computer and database skills
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods
  • Occasional time on the manufacturing floor supporting production teams
