What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manufacturing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manufacturing Engineer, you generally need a degree in engineering (often mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing), along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with CAD software, PLC programming, Lean Manufacturing principles, and Six Sigma certification is commonly required. Effective communication, teamwork, and adaptability are important soft skills for collaborating across departments and responding to production challenges. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring efficient production processes, reducing costs, and maintaining high product quality in a competitive manufacturing environment.

How does a Manufacturing Engineer typically collaborate with other departments to improve production processes?

Manufacturing Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams, such as design, quality assurance, and operations, to optimize production processes. They often participate in meetings to review product designs, address manufacturing challenges, and develop solutions that enhance efficiency and quality. Regular collaboration with maintenance and supply chain teams is also common, ensuring equipment reliability and timely material flow. This teamwork fosters a dynamic environment where continuous improvement is encouraged, and successful projects can lead to increased responsibility and advancement opportunities.

What is manufacturing engineering?

Manufacturing engineering is a branch of engineering focused on designing, analyzing, and improving manufacturing processes, systems, and equipment. Manufacturing engineers work to make production more efficient, cost-effective, and high-quality by implementing new technologies, optimizing workflows, and ensuring safety and sustainability. They collaborate closely with other departments to bring products from design to production, troubleshoot issues, and continuously improve operations. This field is vital in industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, and consumer goods.

What is the difference between Manufacturing Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectManufacturing EngineeringMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Manufacturing, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering; certifications like CMfgEBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred

Job Summary
We are seeking a Senior Manufacturing Engineer with deep, hands-on experience in Deltek Costpoint, specifically MBOM development/management and MRP enablement/implementation. This role will lead cross-functional efforts to strengthen manufacturing execution, improve material planning accuracy, and scale operations while supporting core manufacturing engineering responsibilities.
Job Responsibilities
Costpoint, MBOM, and MRP Leadership
  • Serve as the manufacturing engineering lead for Costpoint MBOM structure development, governance, and ongoing maintenance
  • Lead or co-lead MRP enablement/implementation activities, including process design, master data readiness, and go-live stabilization
  • Define and enforce MBOM configuration standards (assemblies, phantoms, alternates, effectivity, make/buy, units of measure, lead times)
  • Partner with Planning, Supply Chain, Programs, and Finance to improve MRP planning accuracy (demand, supply signals, safety stock, reorder policies)
  • Troubleshoot MRP outcomes (exception messages, shortages, invalid supplies/demands) and drive root-cause corrective actions
  • Support Costpoint data integrity for manufacturing: routings, work centers, run/setup times, scrap factors, yield, and lead times
  • Develop training and SOPs for MBOM/MRP-related processes; coach users and stakeholders across functions

Manufacturing Engineering (Core)
  • Develop/optimize manufacturing processes for new and existing products (assembly, test, integration)
  • Create and maintain work instructions, manufacturing plans, routers, and standard work
  • Lead process improvement initiatives (yield, takt time, throughput, ergonomics, quality escapes)
  • Support production with dispositioning, problem solving, and corrective actions
  • Own tooling/fixture requirements and validation; ensure readiness for production scaling
  • Collaborate with Quality Engineering on FAI, control plans, and process capability improvements
  • Support DFM/DFA feedback to Engineering and participate in product change control (ECO/ECR)

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of manufacturing engineering experience in a production environment (aerospace/defense, complex electromechanical, or regulated manufacturing preferred)
  • Significant Deltek Costpoint experience supporting manufacturing operations (not just user-level familiarity)
  • Demonstrated success building and maintaining MBOMs in Costpoint and improving MBOM governance and accuracy
  • Proven experience leading or materially contributing to MRP implementation / enablement / stabilization efforts
  • Strong understanding of MRP fundamentals (lead times, lot sizing, safety stock, demand/supply netting, planning calendars)
  • Experience with routings, work centers, and labor standards; ability to translate shop floor reality into system data
  • Excellent cross-functional leadership skills and ability to drive alignment between Engineering, Planning, Supply Chain, and Production
  • Strong documentation skills (SOPs, work instructions, training materials)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Costpoint configuration or enhancement projects, including integration points (PLM/ERP, MES, purchasing, inventory)
  • Familiarity with engineering BOM to MBOM transformation processes and change control governance
  • Lean / Six Sigma exposure (Green Belt or equivalent)
  • Experience scaling operations (new facility/start-up line, capacity expansion, new product introduction)
  • Ability to perform data analysis (Excel power user; ERP reporting; SQL a plus)
