Job description

Established and successful commercial plumbing company in Northwest Houston is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the company's accounting and financial operations. With a strong reputation in the commercial construction industry and a sizable, growing operation, the company offers an excellent opportunity for a hands-on financial professional to play an important role in its continued success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee month-end close for multiple entities, including AP, AR, accruals and reconciliations.
  • Manage construction accounting, including WIP, job costing, AIA billing, retainage and project profitability.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements, job margins and project results.
  • Oversee cash management, collections and billing.
  • Maintain and update financial projections and forecasts.
  • Lead the annual budgeting and capital expenditure planning processes.
  • Oversee payroll, payroll tax filings and related compliance.
  • Coordinate annual tax return preparation and financial statement reviews with outside CPA firms.
  • Prepare required financial and project reports, including OCIP reporting.
  • Oversee fixed assets and other financial reconciliations.
  • Work closely with management on financial analysis, risk management and business decisions.
  • Oversee financial and HR-related compliance responsibilities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls and financial reporting.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field preferred. Open to experience in lieu of degree.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with Controller or Accounting Manager experience strongly preferred.
  • Commercial construction, plumbing, mechanical contracting or specialty contractor experience strongly preferred; manufacturing experience will also be considered.
  • Understanding of WIP accounting, job costing, AIA billing, retainage and project margins.
  • Experience with multi-entity accounting and month-end close.
  • Strong Excel, financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting skills.
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Must be hands-on and comfortable being directly involved in the accounting work, not simply overseeing from a distance.

We are looking for a hands-on Controller who is engaged in the details and takes ownership. Someone who can review a financial statement, analyze job margins, identify an issue and follow it through to resolution. This is an excellent opportunity to join an established, successful company and have a meaningful role in its financial operations and continued growth.
