What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Manual Testing and how can they be overcome?

Manual testers often encounter challenges such as repetitive testing tasks, tight deadlines, and the need to adapt quickly to new application features or changes. Overcoming these hurdles involves thorough organization, maintaining detailed documentation, and continually refining test cases to maximize efficiency. Collaborating closely with developers and business analysts helps clarify requirements and prioritize testing efforts, ensuring that quality standards are met. Additionally, staying current with industry best practices and seeking ongoing training can help manual testers remain effective and resilient as technology and processes evolve.

What is a Manual Testing job?

A Manual Testing job involves evaluating software applications manually to identify defects, bugs, and inconsistencies without using automation tools. Testers follow predefined test cases and scenarios to ensure the software meets functional and business requirements. They document test results, report issues, and collaborate with developers to resolve them. Manual testing is essential for exploratory, usability, and ad-hoc testing, where human intuition and judgment are crucial for identifying issues that automation might miss.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Manual Testing position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Manual Testing, you need a solid understanding of software development life cycles, keen attention to detail, and the ability to create and execute detailed test cases, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with bug tracking tools like Jira, test management systems such as TestRail, and foundational certifications like ISTQB are commonly valued. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving skills distinguish top performers in this field. These skills ensure software quality, clear issue reporting, and collaborative problem resolution within diverse development teams.

Job description

SwingDev-a hippo company is the Polish branch of a fast-growing InsurTech product company - Hippo Insurance. We're here to make home insurance smarter and more proactive, using tech to bring fresh solutions. We also create digital products that support our customers, always focusing on what really makes an impact.

Putting a lot of effort into hiring top-tier professionals is a proof that we care a lot about tech experience, the attitude, human approach, and what we could call "culture fit".

"SwingDev is all about people" - yes, it may sound a bit cliche. But whether we're writing code or just hanging out, we know that people are at the heart of everything we do. We like to have a good time and keep things light, even when we're tackling big projects. We could brag about what's making us special, but we've boiled it down to two key ingredients: mature, companionable people who, rather than compete, prefer to inspire and have each other's backs; a culture of trust, empathy, and positivity that keeps us together, lets us interact as teammates and friends, and truly enjoy the ride.

So if you're a QA Engineer looking to shake things up and have a good time while you're at it, you've come to the right place.

About the role:

As a QA Engineer, you'll join the Partner Programs & Portfolio Management project, the engine behind Hippo's own insurance carrier platform - supporting both the PAPR (Partner Program data pipelines) and Risk Modeling charters within the broader Data & Carrier domain. You will partner with a Senior QA Engineer and Sr. SDET within the project.

Our team keeps the project reliable and scalable: the system that MGA partners, underwriters, reinsurance, and finance teams depend on to run the business every day. You'll ensure that new features and platform changes - from data ingestion pipelines and catastrophe risk models to underwriting workflows and policy lifecycle changes - are properly tested before they go live, working closely with Engineers, Data Analysts, and Product Managers from early requirements all the way through to release sign-off.

This role gives you hands-on exposure to testing complex, business-critical workflows in a live insurance carrier environment, including cross-team collaboration across the entire domain.

What will you do?
  • You'll deeply collaborate with Engineering teams. This includes actively participating in the development of new features and initiatives, from initial requirement analysis and test planning to execution, regression testing, and final release sign-off.
  • You'll partner closely with Product Managers. This means you will be responsible for prioritizing testing efforts, clarifying requirements, challenging assumptions from a quality perspective, coordinating Business Acceptance Testing, and advocating for the needs of our customers.
  • You'll work closely with SDETs to expand and maintain our automated test coverage for new features and regression testing. You'll also collaborate with other manual QA engineers on cross-team and cross-BU projects.
  • You'll proactively identify and mitigate potential risks, ensuring that our products meet the highest standards of quality and reliability.
We might be a match if you...
  • Have 3+ years of QA experience, with a focus on manual testing (Black Box, White Box, and Grey Box).
  • Have a good knowledge of software QA methodologies, tools, and processes.
  • Have a good understanding of testing integration, functional, end-to-end.
  • Have a good understanding of microsevices architecture and API testing using tools like Postman.
  • Have experience with SQL (select, join, groups, limits, alises, etc.)
  • Have experience with test case design, execution, and reporting for complex systems (front-end and back-end).
  • Have an ability to create test cases and collections that exercise the requirements and business rules in collaboration with PMs.
  • Worked with test case management tools (preferably XRay).
  • Have good analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Are an independent problem solver but also a collaborative team player.
  • Have a great command of English (written & spoken) and at least basic of Polish.
  • Are available in the afternoons - we prioritize everyone's personal time and work-life fit, but since we work in multinational teams, occasional evening meetings may be necessary to ensure smooth communication across time zones.

You will get extra points for:
  • Experience working in a product company, ideally a startup/scale-up.
  • Experience with Google BigQuery.
  • ISTQB foundation level certificate.
Recruitment process:
  • Send us your CV - it's the best way for us to get to know you.
  • Meet with one of our Recruiters.
  • Join for a 90-minute interview with Wojciech (Senior QA Engineer) and Grzegorz (Manager, Quality Engineering).
  • Meet on the final stage with Marcin and Alicja.
  • and... welcome aboard!
