What is a managing partner?

A Managing Partner is a senior-level executive who shares ownership in a firm or partnership and is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and strategic direction of the business. This role typically involves making key business decisions, managing teams, setting company policies, and representing the company to clients and stakeholders. Managing Partners are common in law firms, accounting firms, and other professional services organizations, where they combine leadership duties with their professional expertise. Their responsibilities may also include financial oversight, business development, and ensuring the firm meets its goals and objectives.

What are some typical challenges a managing partner faces when balancing business development with operational oversight?

Managing Partners often juggle the dual responsibilities of driving growth and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations. A common challenge is allocating time and resources between client acquisition, networking, and leading the firm's strategic direction, while also managing internal processes, team performance, and financial oversight. Successfully balancing these demands requires strong delegation skills, effective communication, and the ability to set clear priorities. Building a strong leadership team and fostering a collaborative work environment can help mitigate these challenges and support both business growth and operational excellence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a managing partner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Managing Partner, you need deep business acumen, strategic leadership experience, and a strong background in finance or law, often supported by an advanced degree such as an MBA or JD. Familiarity with enterprise management software, financial modeling tools, and regulatory compliance systems is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, decision-making ability, and the capacity to inspire and manage teams set outstanding Managing Partners apart. These competencies are vital for driving organizational growth, ensuring compliance, and maintaining productive partnerships.

How do you become a managing partner?

To become a managing partner, an individual typically gains extensive experience in their industry, demonstrates strong leadership and management skills, and often advances through senior roles such as partner or director. Many managing partners also pursue relevant certifications or advanced degrees and develop a deep understanding of the firm's operations and client relationships.

Job Summary

The Manager, Partner Sales is responsible for leading and coaching our business development team, driving consistent top-of-funnel pipeline generation. This role owns the outbound sales development function end-to-end - team performance, process discipline, and pipeline quality - reporting directly into sales leadership.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Manage, coach, and develop a team of BDRs, running structured 1:1s, call reviews, and skill-building sessions to improve individual and team performance

Own top-of-funnel metrics: outbound activity volume, connect rates, meetings booked, and qualified opportunities generated

Translate funnel data into specific coaching priorities and rep-level development plans

Build, document, and enforce a repeatable outbound process - cadence, messaging, qualification criteria - across the team

Partner with sales leadership on hiring, onboarding, and ramping new BDRs

Manage day-to-day performance issues, including accountability conversations and performance improvement plans when needed

Report weekly/monthly on funnel health, pipeline contribution, and forecast accuracy to sales leadership

Collaborate with Sales, Marketing, and Partner teams to align outbound targeting with company priorities

Required Qualifications

3-7+ years managing outbound sales development, BDR, or SDR teams with a demonstrated track record of hitting team pipeline quotas

Proven coaching ability - able to speak to specific instances of developing a rep's skills, not just managing their numbers

Strong command of pipeline management and funnel metrics (activity-to-meeting-to-opportunity conversion)

CRM fluency (HubSpot or equivalent)

Comfortable holding reps accountable to activity standards and quality bars

Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications

Payments or fintech industry background

Experience with partner or agent-channel (ISO) sales models

Familiarity with AI-driven prospecting tools and modern outbound tech stacks (Clay, Apollo, Amplemarket, or similar) - not required to have owned or built the stack, but comfortable operating within one
