What is a managing editor?

A managing editor oversees a company’s daily publication operations and supervises writers, editors, and other staff. As a managing editor, your job duties include generating story ideas, scheduling editorial topics, hiring and coaching a team of personnel, and reporting to the editor-in-chief. The career typically requires at least a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field and extensive experience in writing, editing, or reporting. Additional qualifications include excellent interpersonal, leadership, and organization skills, along with prior management experience.

How does a managing editor typically collaborate with writers and other editorial staff to ensure content quality and consistency?

A Managing Editor works closely with writers, copy editors, and other editorial team members to uphold content standards and ensure consistency across all published materials. This often involves leading regular editorial meetings, providing feedback and guidance on drafts, and coordinating workflows to meet deadlines. Managing Editors also establish and enforce editorial guidelines, facilitate communication between departments (such as design and marketing), and handle conflict resolution to maintain a productive team environment. Their collaborative approach helps ensure that every piece aligns with the publication’s voice and quality expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a managing editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Managing Editor, you need strong editorial judgment, experience in content planning, and a background in journalism or communications, often backed by a relevant degree. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), digital publishing tools, and SEO best practices is typically required. Exceptional leadership, time management, and communication skills help you guide editorial teams and ensure deadlines are met. These skills are essential for maintaining high editorial standards, increasing audience engagement, and coordinating successful publication workflows.

Job description

Here & Now is one of public radio's most trusted and widely distributed programs — reaching 5 million listeners weekly across 500 member stations. At a moment when public media is navigating profound shifts in how audiences consume news, how trust is built, and how journalism integrity is upheld, this role is pivotal. WBUR is seeking a Managing Editor to help shape Here & Now's editorial vision, standards, and content strategy across multiple platforms while building an exceptional editorial team. This is a rare opportunity to shape a program with deep audience trust and national reach — and to help define what authoritative, accessible public-interest journalism looks like for the next decade. This position is based in Boston and reports to the Here & Now Executive Producer.

  • Eight plus years journalism with at least two years in broadcasting and working in a newsroom.
