Our employees ensure data communications networks are engineered, manufactured, deployed, and maintained to the highest standards, enabling faster and more reliable connectivity to communities worldwide. Every member of the SubCom team plays a role in an end-to-end process that is critical to enterprises, governments, big cities, and rural towns.

We encourage, expect, and value creativity, thoughtful risk taking, openness to change, and diverse perspectives. Whether you’re a seasoned applicant seeking a new and exciting challenge, or you’re new to the workforce and looking for a flexible, rewarding, and fast-paced position with an innovative and stable organization (since 1953), SubCom has opportunities to advance your career.

Position Overview

The NPI Engineering Department is seeking a plastics or materials engineer with an extrusion and/or molding background.  The qualified candidate will support new product development (NPD) and introduction (NPI) efforts within the SubCom Cable and Integration factory.  New products will include cable, cable joints, repeater couplings and related products.  As part of New Product Development and Introduction projects, the candidate will oversee equipment procurement, process development trials, product testing, and data analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret cable, joint, and coupling product requirements and develop extrusion, over molding, or cable repair processes for high yield manufacture.
  • Work with equipment and material suppliers to scope, quote, and purchase necessary equipment and materials for New Product Introduction.
  • Work with SubCom Operations and Facilities teams to install and commission new equipment.
  • Develop testing methods and trials to test and qualify new products.
  • Coordinate with Production Planning and Operations groups to schedule and run trials.
  • Analyze trial and test data and determine process and product capabilities.
  • Document process parameters and product certification tests to insure product conformance.

Qualifications

  • Minimum four-year degree in an applicable Engineering discipline.  Plastics, Materials, or Chemical Engineering preferred.
  • Prior experience in the wire and cable industry would be a plus.  For example, cable manufacturing processes such as extrusion or molding; cable test methods such as tensile testing, electrical/high voltage testing, or optical testing; and fiber optics processes such as fiber splicing.
  • Organizational skills to manage equipment procurement, process development, trial execution, and testing programs.
  • Mathematical and analytical skills required to perform technical duties.
  • Understanding and use of statistical processing techniques for cable process evaluation.
  • Basic ability to use mechanical and electrical measuring equipment (ex. micrometers, calipers, ohm meter, thermocouples).
  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel) writing instructions and reports.  Drafting experience (AutoCAD or other) would be a plus.
  • Familiarity with cable testing equipment such as tensile testers, load cells, optical power meters, and temperature chamber equipment.  Experience with automated data acquisition equipment would be a plus.
