Technical Support Specialistย (24x7 Operations)

Location -ย Birmingham, AL
Client -ย Southern Company
Contract -ย 3 Year
โ€ŠWork schedule:ย Initial training is M-F 7a-4p.ย After training, it will be a rotating shift alternating between 6 weeks days and 6 weeks nights, including weekend work on both


Summary of Position Duties

This position is part of aย contracted 24x7x365 support teamย responsible forย frontline computer systems and application diagnostics and monitoring.
The role serves as theย primary communications channelย between customers, technical support personnel, and management.

The successful candidate will play a key part in ensuring theย availability, performance, and complianceย of mission-critical systems supportingย Energy Management Systems (EMS)ย and related applications.


Education & Experience Requirements
  • Formal education inย Computer Science,ย Information Technology, or a related IT field โ€” orย equivalent practical experience.

  • Prior experience inย real-time systems support,ย control center environments, orย utility/energy operationsย preferred.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellentย interpersonal and communication skillsย (oral and written).

  • Ability to work effectively in aย team-oriented and sometimes high-stress environmentย with coordinators, control center personnel, and management.

  • Strongย customer service orientationย with proven ability to manage user expectations and deliver timely support.

  • Knowledge of and ability to comply withย Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP),ย Sarbanesโ€“Oxley (SOX), andย federal regulatory requirements.

  • Strongย multitaskingย andย prioritization skillsย โ€” able to handle multiple concurrent issues and escalate appropriately.

  • Ability to follow and applyย Change Management processesย andย knowledge-based procedures.

  • Working knowledgeย of:

    • Windows operating systems

    • AIX or other UNIX-based systems

    • Distributed computer networksย (a plus)

  • Strongย problem-solvingย andย critical thinkingย abilities.

  • Proven ability toย build and maintain strong working relationshipsย with internal and external customers.

  • Must be able toย work rotating shiftsย including nights, weekends, and holidays.


Job Responsibilities
  • Monitor primary SCADA and ancillary systemsย for operational health and availability.

  • Provideย frontline troubleshooting, diagnostics, and coordination of repairsย with EMS department personnel and other internal teams.

  • Notify and coordinateย with key customers regarding system outages, events, or maintenance that may impact critical operations.

  • Contribute toย process improvement initiativesย and provide customer feedback to Team Leads and Supervisors.

  • Accurately document and track casesย through completion, ensuring all actions are recorded in system logs.

  • Adhere to electronic and physical access policiesย to maintain system integrity and compliance.

  • Supportย Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BC/DR)ย systems on a daily basis.

  • Ensureย regulatory complianceย and operational excellence across all assigned systems.


Other Requirements
  • Must understand and sign theย Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Standard of Conduct.

  • Must adhere toย Separation Protocolย requirements.

  • Must comply with all conditions under theย Southern Company Insider Threat Program, including enhanced background checks, drug screening, and psychological assessment.

  • May be required toย remain sequestered locally to the control centerย during severe weather or emergency operations.

  • This position requiresย rotating 8ย or 12-hour shiftsย (day and night).
