The expected ENTRY pay range for this position based on experience and equity within the Judicial Branch is $63,000.00 to $69,125.00.
This position is exempt under the FLSA.

About the Position

As the creative mind behind the signage plan for the Judicial Branch of Arizona in Maricopa County, the Sign Designer creates and maintains a visually appealing and cohesive signage brand for informational and wayfinding purposes for both interior, and exterior signage. Combining design expertise with technical acumen, they ensure that signs are visually striking, functional, and convey their message effectively. This dynamic role involves not only producing artwork for both internal and external production, but also meticulously plans sign projects from conception to installation.

Position Qualifications

Education:

  • A bachelor's degree in graphic design, web design, architecture or a closely related field.

Experience:

  • Two (2) years of professional level experience working as a facility signage designer, at a sign company designing signs, or in a directly related capacity.

OR

Combined education and experience qualifications:

  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education or job-related experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona Driver License.

Our Preferred Candidate Has:

  • Three or more years of professional-level experience working as a facility signage designer, at a sign company designing signs, or in a directly related capacity.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Typography, color theory, and graphic design principles.
  • Sign industry materials and manufacturing, including sign fabrication.
  • The International Building Codes and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
  • Industry trends in commercial and institutional signage, methods of construction, and types of sign supports and attachments.
  • Wayfinding principles.

Skill in:

  • The use of Adobe Illustrator, CADTools, CorelDRAW, InDesign, Composer or similar software.
  • The use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining quality and attention to detail.
  • Monitoring and assessing the performance of staff to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Personnel resources management through motivating, developing, and directing people as they work.

Essential Job Tasks

  • Establishes and continuously promotes and maintains a unified sign design brand using best practices and standards.
  • Conducts comprehensive reviews of facility signage and performs field surveys to produce proposed design solutions.
  • Creates design concepts and layouts for various types of signs, considering factors such as branding, messaging, readability, and aesthetics. Prepares high quality production ready artwork files for manufacturing including both conceptual as well as technical designs.
  • Consults with stakeholders to understand their signage needs. Provides design recommendations and options based on sign branding guidelines.
  • Chooses appropriate materials for signage based on factors such as durability, location, and cost-effectiveness. Ensures materials comply with industry standards and regulations.
  • Develops detailed sign layouts and mock-ups to visualize the final product.
  • Selects suitable images, fonts, colors, and graphic elements to create visually appealing and legible signage. Ensures all designs align with the sign request and sign branding guidelines.
  • Collaborates with the Signage Specialist and suppliers to ensure that the signage is produced accurately and meets quality standards. Reviews prototypes and samples for approval.
  • Ensures that all signage designs comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements for accessibility. Ensures signage is available in Spanish when appropriate to support equal access to justice.
  • Collaborates with Branch Management and County department stakeholders to define signage requirements, assess existing signage setups, establish budget parameters, and present design options through mockup drawings.
  • Manages multiple sign projects simultaneously, including timelines, budgets, and communication with stakeholders.
  • Works closely on the production and installation of signage to ensure designs are efficient, accurate, and use best practices. Conducts quality checks on finished signage to verify that it meets design specifications and client expectations.
  • Maintains inventory for required sign components and tracks and records material usage for job costing.
  • Provides regular onsite supervision and employs in-person assessment methods to gauge business needs through direct observation, monitoring group dynamics with face-to-face interaction, and interpreting body language and nonverbal cues. Establishes interpersonal connections, fosters engagement, and exemplifies expected behaviors.

Working conditions:

Must be able to work in a normal indoor office environment and occasionally outdoors. The job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling, bending/kneeling. Ability to move objects lifting floor to waist (up to 30 pounds), pushing/pulling (up to 30 pounds) short distances (25 feet or less), speak, hear, see, read, stand, and walk. Dexterity of hands for computer work, desk work, and driving motor vehicles. Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 20% walking/standing.

Typically, successful candidates are hired at a salary rate up to the midpoint of the range, based on applicable experience, internal equity, and budgetary allowances.

The Judicial Branch of Arizona in Maricopa County participates in the State Retirement systems ASRS or PSPRS. As such, mandatory membership for all full-time employees includes payroll deducted contributions consistent with each retirement system's requirements. The current contribution rate for ASRS is 12.27% and the current contribution rate for PSPRS is 5.84% and up for the defined contribution plan and 8.82% for the defined benefit plan. Judicial Branch facilities are located throughout Maricopa County. This position may be reassigned to other locations. Assignments will be made based upon the needs of the department.
