Job description

Job Summary
Under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), performs general receptionist, secretarial and clerical duties in an accurate and timely manner while functioning as the focal communication source in the main ED nursing station. This includes but is not limited to efficient, orderly and accurate processing of the patient's record, courteous interaction and timely response to phone calls and call lights, and accurate and timely initiation of department protocols. Also includes assisting RN in triage and escorting/transporting patients to their assigned rooms. Maintains a clean, safe environment and provides support services for patients, families and staff members. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • A high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • BLS certification or must obtain during Orientation and prior to reporting to department.

Preferred Job Requirements
  • One year of hospital or office experience
  • Medical terminology

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, Hospital Administrators, providers, consultants, business associates and regulatory agencies presenting a professional image as a representative of Marion General Hospital.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
  • Excellent time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to problem solve, multi-task in a fast-paced setting and work well in a team environment.
  • Developed computer skills to include proficiency with Microsoft Office, telephone system and the ability to learn and proficiently perform computer applications related to department operations and job function.
  • Customer service skills.
  • High degree of accuracy with concentration and close attention to detail.
  • Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.
  • Ability to manage multiple issues simultaneously and appropriately prioritize based on patient and department needs.
  • Basic working understanding of concepts of infection control principles to prevent the spread of infection to patients, self and others.

Working Conditions
  • Office environment with periods of prolonged sitting and busy emergency department environment with periods of walking, pushing/pulling wheelchairs while transporting patients.
  • Work maybe subject to interruptions and occasional high stress levels.
  • Ability to work any shift, occasional extended hours, holidays and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.
  • May be exposed to blood and body fluids or tissue and other hazardous materials.
  • Must tolerate strong odors and frequent alarms.
  • Works with protected health information.

Physical and Mental Activities, Tools and Equipment
  • Use of personal computer and other standard office equipment including but not limited to: telephone, fax, copier, calculator, and scanners.
  • Standing, walking, stooping, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling to provide patient care and to utilize patient care devices necessary to perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Repetitive wrist, finger and hand movement.
  • Occasional manipulation of large volumes of books, charts, reports or files.
  • Lifting supplies or equipment.
  • Ability to push wheelchairs and carts with oxygen tanks and IV poles.
  • Ability to observe patients and monitoring equipment.
