Primary Function and Scope:


Lays out, fits, and assembles parts to make and repair cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, or machinists’ hand tools by performing, but not limited to, the following duties. The Level I Toolmaker works on more basic jobs within the department and requires some supervisory oversight.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Studies blueprint to determine machining to be done and plans layout and assembly.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock to lay out for machining by other workers.
  • Operates drill press to drill and tap holes in parts.
  • Smoothes and scrapes parts to fit.
  • Positions and secures parts on surface plate.
  • Assembles parts into product and verifies dimensions and alignments.
  • Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, drill presses, milling machines, and grinders to machine parts to specifications.
  • Sets up and operates surface grinder to grind surface of parts.
  • Verifies dimensions of parts and installation of components.
  • Tests assembled mechanism.
  • Maintains clean work area.
  • Observe safety procedures including but not limited to wearing proper hearing and vision protection with side shields and safety footwear.
  • Other duties as necessary when requested by management within Federal and State regulations for the position.
Requirements:

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Education And/Or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • 0-10 Years and/or combination of education and experience.
  • Enrollment in NYS Apprenticeship Program or completion of NYS Apprenticeship Program preferred
  • Must have Prototrak experience.

Language Skills: Effective verbal/written communication. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general technical procedures.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra. Proficient in understanding blueprints and interpreting GD&T.


Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Wide variety of duties requiring considerable judgment to work independently such as devising new methods, adapting or changing standard procedures to meet new conditions, and making decisions guided by precedent and within established policies.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
