Job description

Safety & Security Officer

The Safety & Security Officer supports and advances the mission of FCS by overseeing the safety and security of students, staff, visitors, and property on campus; is responsible to the Business & Operations Director.

Responsibilities of the Safety & Security Officer

A. Student/campus safety-related responsibilities

  • Patrol school grounds/buildings multiple times each day; maintain an obvious daily presence in all key areas of campus (hallways, parking lots, cafeteria, etc.)
  • Develop healthy and helpful relationships with students, staff, parents, and visitors
  • Assure visitors report to school offices for Raptor Visitor Management registration; accompany visitors as necessary while on campus
  • Address improper behavior with students and attempt to obtain voluntary compliance with school policies, detaining students if necessary
  • Monitor security cameras and research recorded data when needed
  • Report violations of school policies to the building principal
  • Attend major school events, after school and evening events as requested, all home football games (typically Saturdays), major sports events and tournaments, and other events/activities at the discretion of the Business & Operations Director
  • Available to consult after school hours for emergency school-related security issues
  • Discreetly and appropriately maintains firearm on person, if legally permitted

B. Administrative/facilities-related responsibilities

  • Maintain ongoing discussions with Business and Operations Director and building principals and other administrators as appropriate to remain up to date with safety & security needs on campus
  • Suggest policies and procedures to improve safety & security
  • Help facilitate safe traffic flow on campus
  • Note and report any safety concerns/violations/observations to appropriate administrators
  • Maintain records of contacts made with outside safety/security vendors
  • Ensure safety & security-related school equipment is in good working order
  • Issue keys, security badges, radios, and other equipment and maintain record of issuance and collection
  • Pursue updated training and knowledge of new safety & security procedures
Requirements

The Safety & Security Officer should have the following qualifications:

  • Committed Christian with a close personal walk with the Lord and the Christian character qualities to serve as a role model for young people
  • Regular in attendance at an evangelical Protestant church
  • Commitment to a Biblical lifestyle, not promoting or engaging in premarital, extramarital, transgender, or homosexual behavior
  • If married, a solid commitment based on Mark 10:9 and positive marital relationship
  • Strong commitment to Christian Education
  • Former Law Enforcement Officer in good standing or retired Law Enforcement Officer. Experience must be within the previous 10 years.
  • Knowledge of state and local laws pertaining to the role of School Security Officer
  • Maintain (or obtain within 180 days of employment) appropriate certifications such as:
    • School Security Officer
    • Special Conservator of the Peace
    • Security Officer Handgun, if appropriate (pass semi-annual qualification with 85%)
    • Arrest Authority
    • CPR/1st Aid
    • VA Department of Criminal Justice System requirements
  • Pass a background check and drug screening at any time requested
  • Experience with safety and/or security responsibilities
  • Understands the basic needs and behaviors of students at all levels
  • Ability to communicate effectively and relate well with students, staff, and visitors
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful and dangerous situations
  • Maintains confidentiality
  • Able to stand/walk for long periods
  • Approachable, compassionate, fair, and firm when needed
  • Teachable, servant spirit
