Job description

DESCRIPTION The Department The Public Works Department is a dynamic organization that readily adapts to the needs of the Torrance Community in providing quality and reliable service to the public. The department is made up of over 200 employees within five distinct divisions who provide service to our residents, businesses, and other City departments to improve and maintain the City's streets, sidewalks, landscaping, traffic, sewers, waste collection, and water systems. The Position The Public Works Supervisor plans and supervises assigned programs and/or services in the Streetscape Division of the Public Works Department.

Assigned programs and/or services include tree trimming, removals and landscape median maintenance within the street right-of-way or other easements. Work involves planning, prioritizing and scheduling assigned programs and/or services; supervising, evaluating and training work crews engaged in daily operations; reviewing and approving completed activity; obtaining, allocating and maximizing resources; and preparing and maintaining operational and administrative records. QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES Education and Experience Three years of progressively responsible experience with at least two of the three years directly related to landscape leadership; and a high school diploma or equivalent. Formal technical training in a relevant field is preferred. Licenses and/or Certificates Requires a valid California commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements.

NOTE: This position requires a California Class B driver's license at a minimum and Must possess and maintain an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist credential. Ideal Candidate In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate will possess: Ability to multi-task and prioritize work; Knowledge of supervision principles and practices; Strong organizational skills and self-motivation; Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; Outstanding customer service skills; Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with management, staff, the public, contractors, and public agencies; California Department of Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) or Qualified Applicator License (QAL). Knowledge of tree maintenance, tree identification, and tree assessment.

Knowledge of planning, installing, and maintaining irrigation systems. Knowledge of Arbor Access tree inventory system. Knowledge of Accela system.
