Manager Program Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manager Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager Program Manager, you need strong leadership, project management expertise, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a bachelor's degree and PMP or similar certification. Familiarity with project management tools like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira, as well as budgeting and reporting systems, is typically required. Excellent communication, strategic thinking, and stakeholder management are essential soft skills for overseeing complex programs and guiding teams. These competencies ensure effective program delivery, alignment with organizational goals, and the ability to navigate challenges across multiple projects.

How do Manager Program Managers typically balance overseeing multiple projects while supporting their teams' development?

Manager Program Managers often juggle several large-scale initiatives simultaneously, which requires strong organizational skills and effective delegation. They regularly meet with project leads to monitor progress, troubleshoot issues, and ensure alignment with organizational goals, while also providing mentorship and professional development opportunities for their teams. Striking a balance between delivering results and fostering team growth involves transparent communication, setting clear expectations, and empowering team members to take ownership of their work.

They manage the overall program, ensuring that individual projects align with business goals, stay on schedule, and meet budgetary requirements. Program Managers work closely with project managers, stakeholders, and executive leadership to address risks, allocate resources, and facilitate communication across teams.

Job description

Description

JOIN OUR TEAM

The Convergence and Signature Programs team is focused on developing and guiding the execution of TELUS's Digitization and Convergence strategy - simplifying and streamlining business processes as we consolidate Mobility, Home Solutions, and SoD lines of business under a converged target architecture. Under this mandate, the team delivers signature capital programs for the organization in partnership with CMO, CPO, Channel, CSE, SMB, and CIO leads. We are leaders in the new capability delivery space, shaping the Future Mode of Operations (FMO) and best practices for convergence delivery and sustained operations across our current and new platforms.

This team sits within the Business Convergence & Commerce (BCC) organization, which is responsible for delivering exceptional business value through converged technology solutions that power key business priorities across all TELUS lines of business, brands, and segments.

We are a fast-moving, results-driven team where you'll be expected to take ownership of critical programs, operate with a high degree of autonomy, and partner closely with CIO and business stakeholders to drive meaningful outcomes.

HERE'S THE IMPACT YOU'LL MAKE AND WHAT WE'LL ACCOMPLISH TOGETHER

As Senior Strategy Manager, you will be the business prime for a defined portfolio of capital-funded programs within the Convergence & Signature Programs team. You will own the end-to-end delivery of complex, cross-functional initiatives - including programs like Rate Plan Change (RPC) across all lines of business - driving them through discovery, planning, development, testing, and launch.

Reporting to the Manager, Convergence & Signature Programs, you will be the connective tissue between technical CIO delivery teams and business stakeholders, ensuring programs stay on track, risks are surfaced early, and decisions are made with clarity and speed. Your ability to operate independently, manage ambiguity, and synthesize complexity into actionable plans will define your impact on this team.

HERE'S HOW
  • Lead end-to-end program delivery for a defined portfolio of capital-funded convergence initiatives - from requirements definition and discovery through design, build, testing, launch, and post-launch sustainment
  • Serve as the business prime and subject matter expert for your programs, owning the solution to the degree that you can represent it confidently across technical and non-technical audiences
  • Bridge the gap between CIO technical delivery teams and business stakeholders, facilitating clear decision-making, resolving blockers, and maintaining program momentum
  • Build and maintain a prioritized 12-month program roadmap for your portfolio, interlocked cross-functionally with channel, marketing, and enabling teams through a structured intake and architecture process
  • Manage capital program activities including budget tracking, spend forecasting, and reporting on adherence to allocated budgets and required scope/benefits
  • Develop and maintain program governance artifacts - including status reports, risk and issue logs, decision registers, and milestone trackers - to provide consistent visibility to the Manager and senior leadership
  • Prepare and contribute to executive-level program updates for Directors and VPs, with clear, concise, and compelling storylines
  • Lead cross-functional working sessions and workshops to define requirements, resolve dependencies, align on operating models, and drive adoption of new capabilities
  • Proactively identify and manage program risks and issues, escalating to the Manager with recommendations where needed
  • Champion the customer and agent experience within your programs, ensuring that technical solutions translate into meaningful improvements to key journeys
  • Contribute to the team's broader capability and knowledge base, sharing learnings across programs and helping to shape best practices for program delivery
Qualifications

YOU'RE THE MISSING PIECE OF THE PUZZLE

You are likely in a similar strategy or program management role today, with many of the following abilities and experience points:

  • You are an experienced program delivery professional with a proven track record of driving complex, multi-workstream initiatives to completion in a large, matrixed organization - operating with a high degree of independence
  • You are technically inquisitive and willing to get into the details of a solution so that you can own it as the business prime - you don't wait for the answer to come to you
  • You lead through influence - skilled at aligning cross-functional stakeholders, navigating competing priorities, and driving programs forward without direct authority
  • You are adept at translating complex, ambiguous information into clear plans, decision frameworks, and executive-quality communications
  • You use data to drive decisions and action, and are comfortable building a business case or program rationale from the ground up
  • You like things to move fast and are skilled at using collaboration, creativity, and structured thinking to remove barriers and keep programs on track
  • You manage ambiguity well, adapt quickly to changing priorities, and are able to execute across multiple programs simultaneously without losing attention to detail

GREAT-TO-HAVES

We are especially motivated to connect with individuals with one or more of the following:

  • 5-7 years of hands-on program or project management experience, delivering multiple complex initiatives simultaneously from creation to implementation in a large-scale or enterprise environment
  • Experience working with both modern and legacy technology platforms, with the ability to navigate technical constraints as a business-side program lead
  • Knowledge of TELUS's product, channel, and technology landscape - TELUS internal experience is a distinct asset
  • Familiarity with capital planning, business case development, and cost assessment processes
  • Experience with convergence, platform migration, or billing/rating programs in a telecom environment is an asset
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent certification in business, engineering, technology, marketing, or telecommunications
  • PMP, Agile, MBA, or Process Management certifications are assets
