Job description

Amazon OpenSearch is a fully managed and Serverless service that makes it easy to deploy, operate, and scale OpenSearch clusters for log analytics, full-text search, application monitoring, and more. As part of AWS, we serve hundreds of thousands of customers who rely on OpenSearch to power mission-critical search and observability workloads at scale.
The Amazon OpenSearch Core Foundation team owns the foundational indexing and search systems powering both OpenSearch Managed Service and Serverless offerings. We are building next-generation systems that support multiple data formats, diverse execution engines, and federated queries across heterogeneous data sources. As Software Development Manager, you will lead the team responsible for developing OpenSearch's next-generation indexing systems - delivering best-in-class price-performance for search and analytics workloads. You will drive the technical vision and execution for systems that serve both managed and Serverless customers at scale, shaping how millions of users index, store, and query their data.
Key job responsibilities
* Lead and grow an organization of senior engineers focused on OpenSearch Core Foundation Indexing system, fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership, and customer obsession.
* Define and execute technical roadmaps for OpenSearch Indexing systems, balancing near-term customer needs with long-term architectural investments.
* Drive architectural decisions for large-scale distributed Indexing systems, consistency models, and cross-region index replication.
* Partner with product and business stakeholders to translate customer requirements into engineering priorities, ensuring the team delivers features that have measurable customer impact.
* Establish operational excellence standards for the OpenSearch Indexing systems, including availability, latency, and durability targets, and lead the team in meeting and exceeding those targets.
* Recruit, develop, and retain top engineering talent; build a diverse, high-performing organization with a strong pipeline of future leaders.
* Collaborate across OpenSearch and AWS with peer SDMs and Directors to align on shared infrastructure, resolve cross-team dependencies.
* Communicate complex technical strategies clearly to senior leadership.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
