Description
Cary Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources is seeking a detail-oriented and organized individual to assist with coordination of Outdoor Recreation public programming. This position supports the Outdoor Recreation Program Supervisor with program logistics, record keeping, participant communication, and administrative organization for public programs, camps, and special events.
Primary responsibilities include maintaining program records, assisting with scheduling and logistics, supporting registration processes, and coordinating program information across staff and instructors. This role helps ensure Outdoor Recreation programs operate efficiently by supporting administrative processes and preparing materials and resources needed for program operations.
In addition to administrative support, the position will instruct programs across multiple Outdoor Recreation program areas.
This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.
Evening and weekend availability is required depending on program schedules.
Typical Tasks
  • Assume a leadership role, working alongside peers and under the guidance of supervisors, to further the mission of Outdoor Recreation and the Town of Cary.
  • Maintains program documentation by assisting with participant records and programmatic reports.
  • Responds to public inquiries regarding programs and assists with registration, scheduling, and program information.
  • Prepare, organize, and manage equipment, supplies, and materials needed for programs, and coordinate supply purchases as approved.
  • Assists staff and instructors by organizing program information, preparing materials, and supporting administrative tasks related to program operations.
  • Supports the coordination of camps, programs, and special events.
  • Instruct programs as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of recreation programming and program operations
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills; maintaining deadlines, accurate records and program documentation across multiple programmatic areas.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with staff, participants, and the public
  • Basic proficiency with computers and common office software

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Education and Experience
Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED AND a minimum of 1 year of experience in administrative support and outdoor recreation programs, camp programs, or a related field.
Requires a CPR/First Aid certification or the ability to obtain certification with provided training.
Preference will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:
  • Some lead instruction experience with youth or outdoor recreation programs
  • Some experience with program registration systems or scheduling software

Physical Requirements:
Work requires the employee to work outside in variable weather and site conditions, including working at height. An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted, move about freely, and carry moderately heavy items such as equipment and water coolers. An employee must be able to hear and talk to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction. Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal.
