Job Description
The Director of Sports & Aquatics provides leadership to youth sports, adults sports, and aquatics. Leads all sports programming, swim lesson programming, and aquatics operations. Manages and leads a team of volunteer coaches, swim lesson instructors, lifeguards, and supervisors to provide quality recreational opportunities to the Greater Peoria community.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification achieved within first six months of employment.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of related experience (e.g., supervisor or coordinator of recreational programs) preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage staff and volunteers.
  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Experience working in a Y (or similar) membership organization.
  • Proven results in increasing program quality and growth through exceptional planning and organizational skills.
  • Must obtain within 30 days of employment and then maintain current certifications in CPR/AED Basic Life
  • Support, First Aid and Oxygen Administration.
  • Must obtain Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification within first six months of employment.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:
  • Ability to work in excess of a 40-hour week with irregular work hours, if needed.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  • Will work seasonally in outdoor environments in varying weather conditions, including heat and humidity.
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
  • Ability to collaborate with others and contribute to a positive team-environment.
  • Ability to view/enter data for long periods of time.

Essential Functions
  • Manages all sports and aquatics programming including; developing and monitoring program budgets to meet fiscal objectives; compiling program statistics to evaluate program effectiveness and participation; securing, scheduling, and maintaining appropriate program spaces; planning and coordinating activities, workshops, and events; and ensuring materials and resources are available and well maintained.
  • Ensures programs and services meet community needs by supervising existing program activities, establishing new initiatives, and expanding services within the community as appropriate. Assists in marketing and distribution of program information to increase awareness and engagement.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as they relate to program areas, including ADA accommodations where appropriate; ensures organizational program standards are met and that all safety procedures are followed.
  • Recruits, hires, and develops a diverse staff and volunteer teams. Provides onboarding, training, scheduling, supervision, and ongoing performance evaluation to support a high-quality staff and volunteer experience.
  • Develops and implements structured programming for sports and aquatics including but not limited to; youth basketball leagues, camps and clinics, adult sports leagues, soccer, volleyball, swim lessons, and American Red Cross certification courses.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions; develops and maintains collaborative partnerships with staff, parents and caregivers, schools, and community organizations (e.g., licensing agencies, school administration, park districts, and social service providers) to maximize program impact; maintains clear, consistent communication within area of responsibility.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and passion for aquatics, sports, and recreation.
  • Maintains safety standards for staff, volunteers, and participants in alignment with state, federal, and local YMCA policies and best practices.
  • Organizes or participates in organizational activities such as committees, special events, and fundraising initiatives.
  • Assists the Properties Team in day-to-day and annual maintenance of the outdoor pools and pool house.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
