Senior Heavy Equipment Operator/ Brooksville Operations

This position will be responsible for maintaining our state roadway systems.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to; road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance. Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment.

Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew. Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, work flows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees. Maintains records of operation. Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.

Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.

Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).

Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.

Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

• MATHEMATICAL CALCULATIONS.
• STANDARD SAFETY RULES AND PROCEDURES.
• THE PROCEDURES, TECHNIQUES AND USE OF EQUIPMENT IN THE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF HIGHWAYS, BRIDGES AND/OR OTHER HIGHWAY STRUCTURES.

Skills in:

• OPERATING A VARIETY OF HAND AND POWER TOOLS.
• OPERATING AND PERFORMING MINOR MAINTENANCE ON LARGE EQUIPMENT AND VEHICLES.
• COMPLETING JOB RELATED REPORTS AND FORMS.
• COMMUNICATING BOTH VERBALLY AND IN WRITING, INCLUDING FOLLOWING ORAL/WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS.

Ability to:

• OPERATE A VARIETY OF HEAVY EQUIPMENT.

• READ AND UNDERSTAND JOB RELATED MATERIALS.

• STAND FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME.

Other Job-Related Requirements:

• Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary. While on-duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. A valid Class "A" CDL is required at time hire. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. Must obtain certification in Maintenance of Traffic - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency and four years of infrastructure construction or maintenance experience. An additional year of experience for a total of five years of experience, in infrastructure construction or maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency. A valid Class “A” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is required at time of hire.

This position requires a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

1. three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
2. any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
3. a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
4. a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.

Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.
