Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Director of Risk Management serves as the operational leader for the district's risk management programs, including property and casualty, workers' compensation, unemployment, safety, claims administration, insurance operations, and risk mitigation initiatives. This position provides operational oversight and direction for risk management functions across the district. The position also oversees risk management managers and supports initiatives designed to reduce organizational exposure, strengthen compliance, improve operational effectiveness, and protect district assets. This role also serves as an advisor to district leadership on claims trends, litigation exposure, insurance coverage, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation strategies.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:



  • Bachelor's degree in risk management, Business Administration, Public Administration, Human Resources, Finance, or a related field required
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Additional years of equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:

  • ARM, CPCU, SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP, PHR/SPHR, or other relevant professional designation preferred

WORK EXPEREINCE:

  • Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in risk management, insurance administration, workers' compensation, claims management, unemployment, safety, or related operational leadership
  • Three (3) years of supervisory or management experience required
  • Experience in K-12 education, public sector, governmental, or large complex organizations preferred
  • Experience in K12 education or public sector preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong personal computer and business solutions software skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with accountants, clients, and upper management
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good planning and organizational skills to balance and prioritize work
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, with support personnel and management
  • Communicates with a variety of internal and external parties (city/state/federal agencies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring accurate processing of payroll deductions and garnishments
  • Proven ability to work under pressure
  • Good presentation skills for educating internal clients on accounting principles
  • Manages customer relations with both internal and external parties to ensure the highest level of customer service
  • Responds to written and verbal inquiries for the purpose of providing information and/or direction

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Provides operational leadership for district risk management functions, including property & casualty, workers' compensation, unemployment, claims administration, insurance, and safety programs
  • Supervises and supports Risk Management leadership staff while ensuring consistent implementation of policies, procedures, and operational standards
  • Oversees administration and monitoring of workers' compensation, liability, property damage, unemployment, and auto liability claims
  • Collaborates with legal counsel. TPAs, brokers, and carriers regarding high exposure claims, litigation strategy, settlements, and claims resolution
  • Supports administration of the district's insurance portfolio, including renewals, coverage analysis, policy compliance, broker coordination, and risk ?nancing initiatives
  • Leads enterprise risk management and safety initiatives designed to reduce operational, ?nancial, and reputational risk
  • Monitors compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and industry trends related to risk management and insurance administration
  • Oversees analysis of claims, loss, safety, and exposure data and develops reports, dashboards, and presentations to support data-driven decision-making
  • Monitors vendor performance and service-level expectations for TPAs, brokers, carriers, and related service providers
  • Serves as a liaison with district departments, school leaders, legal counsel, regulatory agencies, and external stakeholders while supporting executive leadership in responding to incidents, investigations, and operational risk concerns
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in person and be available to work on-site during regular business hours and as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator or their representative

Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records. Additional Work Conditions & Physical Abilities:  Will require travel to multiple sites.
