Job description

The Model Risk Manager will be responsible for managing the overall strategic direction for the Bank’s model risk management framework. The Model Risk Manager will continuously enhance model risk management and other policies/procedures within the department’s purview, and communicate the overall model risk in the Bank to senior management and various committees. The candidate will see the delivery of the Risk Appetite Statement, Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA), process maps, validation templates/checklists, model information/determination forms, inventory certification, and other documents etc. In addition, this position includes the management and delivery of model validation assignments for which consists of conducting model validity testing, data validation, performance evaluation, issuing and communicating findings, writing validation reports, and other validation activities.

  • Evaluate model monitoring performance reports and conduct validation testing.
  • Create detailed documentation of testing, validation report, and findings.
  • Participate in meetings with members of business and model teams.
  • Process a learning attitude and gain understanding of the model risk management domain.
  • Schedule and conduct meetings with business and model owners/users/developers to communicate status and findings in various stages of the model validation process.
  • Update model inventory model validation findings inventory, model risk ranking, and data governance framework.
  • Assist with preparing responses to Bank examiners and Internal/External Auditors
  • Assist with various other governance activities and produce various model risk related documents as needed.
  • Create an appropriate validation scope with assistance.
  • Lead the effort to validate models independently, including but not limited to ALLL, ALM, CCAR, PPNR, AML, and CECL models.
  • Help maintain model risk policies/procedures, risk and control self-assessment, process maps, and other ad hoc documents.
  • Write and present in-depth model validation reports and provide value-added recommendations to model owners and developers.
  • Process and gain in-depth understanding of the latest industry research and standards on modeling, statistics, and regulations.
  • Lead the effort to perform independent validation.
  • Conduct and develop a validation scope independently.
  • Produce clear and in-depth validation report for Full-Scope and RR1 models independently.
  • Support the Model Validation or Model Risk Manager in leading the validation team in producing value-added validation of the Bank's models.
  • Participate and contribute to regulatory and audit meetings.
  • Manage the department's model validation process according to SR11-7 and Bank policies.
  • Ownership of the model validation procedures and ensure all staff comply with the established protocol.
  • Develop validation analyst and associate knowledge in the Model Risk space.
  • Coach and mentor validation analysts and associates to enhance performance and skills.
  • Support the efforts in workflow management using Bank Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) system.
  • Support the improvement of governance frameworks for data validation.
  • Support the development of detailed project/resource plans to monitor and track progress.
  • Manage the GRC system for model inventory, validation findings, and remediations and backup/archive database.
  • Conduct meetings with model developers, business units, vendors, and produce meeting minutes.
  • Create and execute project work plans and collaborate with various teams in Finance, Credit Risk, BSA/AML, etc.
  • Create periodic analysis and update presentations and reports for senior management and regulatory exams.
  • Interact with the external regulators and internal auditors to report on model governance progress with action plans and overall model governance activity in response to audit/regulatory requests.
  • Interact with Enterprise Risk team to prepare related documents, i.e. the risk appetite, risk assessment, issue tracking, examination management, RCSA, policies and any reporting items to the Committees bank wide.
  • Facilitate Committee meeting: prepare meeting agenda, produce minute, organize meeting materials, create presentation slides, track action items, and summarize information package for ERMC and BRC.
  • Help to enforce standard policies and procedures related to ranking the findings, model usage, and tracking and process controls associated with the modeling process.
  • Provide effective support to the validation team.
  • Lead the efforts in workflow management using Bank Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) system.
  • Drive the improvement of governance frameworks for data validation while watching for evolution of applicable regulation.
  • Provide oversight in large modeling initiatives for alignment with Bank policies and industry best practices.
  • Write and present in-depth model validation reports and provide value-added recommendations to model owners and developers.
  • Deep understanding of statistical and financial discipline.
  • Process and gain in-depth understanding of the latest industry research and standards on modeling, statistics, and regulations.
  • Support the Model Validation or Model Risk Manager in leading the validation team in producing value-added validation of the Bank's models.
  • Participate and contribute to regulatory and audit meetings.

Job Qualifications/Requirements

Education/Credentials

  • Education Level: master’s degree (Ph.D. degree preferred) in finance/business/economics, mathematics/statistics, or related analytical fields.
  • Preferred: Industry certifications such as FRM, PRM, or CFA 

Skills

  • Knowledge and understanding of regulatory expectations for model risk, financial and operational risk management, and best practices.
  • Required: Experience documenting models.
  • Required: Effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Required: Effective technical writing skills.
  • Required: Experience with banking industry.
  • Preferred: At least fifteen years of experience in risk management, audit, consulting, or model related fields.
  • Preferred: At least seven years of supervisory or managerial experience.
  • Preferred: ProficientinSAS, R, Python, VBA, SQLprogramming.
  • Preferred: Experience working with large databases.
  • Preferred: Discipline, task focus, self-motivation, and a proven record of delivering high quality results within strict deadlines.

The salary range for this full-time position is $200,000 - $210,000 annually + bonus + benefits 

Salary ranges are determined based on qualifications, level, and location.
