ROLE OVERVIEW:

As a Senior Estimator, you will support Thiess throughout North America. This position is responsible for developing, managing, and coordinating capital cost estimates for mining and reclamation projects. In this role, you will partner closely with mining and construction teams while managing special projects and collaborating across departments to ensure successful project execution. 

This role is intended for an experienced senior estimator with experience leading large capital cost estimates for mining studies, major project development programs, and execution-stage mining projects. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience coordinating multi-discipline estimates for mining, waste storage, reclamation, closure, and site development scopes. Experience leading estimates for PEA, PFS, FS, execution, sustaining capital, and large projects is strongly preferred. Contractor-side, construction, field, or preconstruction experience is considered a significant asset. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver estimating for complex projects ranging from $1M to $10B+ across open pit mines, infrastructure, utilities, and multi-phase study programs  
  • Support large-scale mining studies (PEA, PFS, FS), execution-stage planning, sustaining capital programs, and portfolio-level estimates 
  • Coordinate and compile input parameters to develop timely multi-discipline cost estimates and implementation schedules 
  • Work closely with engineering, operations, and stakeholder teams to detail scope and validate material takeoffs, drawings, and client-provided data 
  • Identify, assess, and quantify project risks and opportunities, including potential schedule impacts through design reviews and formal risk analyses 
  • Develop estimate execution plans and partner with HR to outline labor-force work strategies and site-specific wages that support assumptions, and staffing needs 
  • Support BDM interface with client counterparts and serve as the primary estimating point of contact ensuring clear communication, scope alignment, and estimate defensibility 
  • Drive innovative solutions and apply industry trends and best practices to maintain efficiency and competitiveness 
  • Prepare basis of cost estimate report deliverables for the end user 
  • Support special projects and perform other related duties as needed 

WHAT YOU'LL BRING 

Education

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field. Mining Engineering is preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 7 years of estimating experience with technical expertise across mining and heavy civil earth works 
  • Proficient in developing cost estimates for mining or heavy civil related projects including open pit, material handling, crushing and conveying, and site infrastructure facilities 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large studies and program-level estimates, including coordinating multiple technical disciplines, managing estimate inputs, reviewing estimate maturity, and presenting estimate results to project teams and clients 
  • Advanced understanding of various contract structures and their impact on estimating, utilizing high-level professional judgment, creativity, and innovative strategies to solve complex estimating challenges 
  • Experience with databased estimating platforms (CATS, InEight Estimate, Sage Timberline Estimating, On-Screen Take-Off, MCASES MII, IPE, HCSS or other) 
  • Experience with one or more scheduling software (Primavera P6, MS Project) 
  • Proven success in driving end-to-end estimating activities, encompassing plan development, team coordination, technical review, and formal presentation to key stakeholders and clients 
  • Ability to guide and mentor team members in estimating techniques and methodologies 
  • Positive attitude with strong relationship building skills 
  • Valid Driver's License 
  • Authorization to work lawfully in the USA without sponsorship from Thiess 
  • Must be fluent in the English language 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work is primarily performed in an office environment, with prolonged periods of sitting, typing, and viewing a computer screen
  • May occasionally require standing, walking, or lifting objects weighing up to 25 lbs such as files, laptop equipment, or office supplies
  • Must have adequate vision, hearing, and hand-eye coordination to perform computer and phone-based work effectively
  • Occasional travel to project sites, meetings, or training may be required, which can involve driving or extended periods of sitting
  • When visiting operational sites, the employee must comply with all site safety requirements and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed
  • Must be physically capable of safely performing the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
