Job description

THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF MANATEE COUNTY
Local Title: HEALTH AIDE (NON-INSTRUCTIONAL)
State Title: Clinic Attendant/Health Aide
JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB GOAL:
To provide nursing support and assistance to students in the clinic or assigned classroom(s).
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Eagerness to assist children in the learning process.
  3. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  4. Current CPR certification (Adult and pediatric) or capable and willing to become certified.
  5. Current First Aide certification or capable and willing to become certified.
  6. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Patient Care Assistant (PCA) certification preferred. This is a requirement for health aides working in the school clinic.
  7. Willing to be moved as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of child growth and development. Some understanding of various exceptionalities. Possess good organizational skills. Ability to prioritize functions and manage time wisely. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to work well with students, teachers, parents, and school staff. Ability to maintain confidentiality. CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) or PCA (Patient Care Assistant) preferred (required for clinic positions). Some experience in health care preferred.

Principal or designee, Health Services Specialist and Registered Nurse responsible for the clinic
SUPERVISES:
N/A
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Provide care to sick and/or injured students and employees
  2. As trained by the School Nurse, administer authorized medications in accordance with state law and School Board policies.
  3. Chart and record administration of medications.
  4. Manage or assist in managing emergency health needs.
  5. May be trained by the School Nurse to perform some medical procedures, such as gastrointestinal tube feedings, nebulizer treatments, and cauterizations.
  6. Record data on health room log/spreadsheet, student health record, and other forms as directed.
  7. Assist registered nurse with immunization record review and data collection.
  8. Participate in health screenings and health promotion activities as assigned.
  9. Provide information and referral to community agencies for any person as directed.
  10. Notify Public Health Unit and Health Services Specialist of reportable communicable disease when verified.
  11. Follow OSHA and communicable disease guidelines
  12. Order health supplies with approval.
  13. Attend school staff and school health meetings.
  14. Attend assigned inservice training sessions.
  15. Consult with the Registered Nurse as necessary or appropriate.
  16. Ensure adherence to good safety standards.
  17. Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  18. Exhibit interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
  19. Model and maintain high ethical standards.
  20. Represent the school and district in a positive and professional manner.
  21. Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
  22. Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, administration and vendors.
  23. Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
  24. Prepare all required reports and maintain all appropriate records.
  25. Participate successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.
  26. Assigned work station will be a specific classroom(s) with occasional work in clinic as needed.
  27. Complete duties described above appropriate to assigned classroom.
  28. Assist medically complex students, as needed, by lifting, transferring, and/or positioning to facilitate educational activities and good health.
  29. Assist the classroom teacher as directed or appropriate
  30. Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
  31. For clinic staff: Perform, as necessary, those medical procedures allowed by law after student specific training by a Registered Nurse. Procedures may include but are not limited to g-tube feedings, blood glucose checks, carbohydrate counting, catheterization, nebulizer treatments. May include heavy lifting in and out of vehicular equipment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force as needed to move objects.
This position requires the ability to move quickly- including frequent walking and, when necessary, running-to respond promptly to emergencies
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits shall be paid in accordance with the agreement negotiated between the Manatee Education Association (MEA) and the School Board of Manatee County. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District and MEA.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the agreement negotiated between the MEA and the School Board of Manatee County.
