What is a manager in training?

A Manager In Training (MIT) is an entry-level management position designed to prepare individuals for leadership roles within a company. The program typically involves hands-on training, mentorship, and exposure to various aspects of the business, such as operations, customer service, and team management. The goal is to equip trainees with the skills and knowledge needed to successfully manage a team or department upon completion. Manager In Training positions are common in retail, hospitality, and other service-oriented industries. Successful MITs often move into assistant manager or manager roles after finishing the program.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manager in training, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager In Training, you need foundational leadership abilities, problem-solving skills, and a relevant educational background, often a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, scheduling software, and basic financial tools is commonly required, and some programs may prefer or require management training certifications. Strong communication, adaptability, and team-building skills help candidates stand out as they learn to motivate staff and resolve workplace challenges. These skills and qualities are vital for developing effective management practices and preparing for higher leadership responsibilities.

What are some common challenges faced by manager in training candidates during the program, and how can they overcome them?

Manager In Training (MIT) candidates often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new responsibilities, balancing hands-on tasks with learning leadership skills, and managing time effectively across different departments. It's common to feel stretched as you transition from individual contributor to supervisor, especially when learning to lead a team and make strategic decisions. To overcome these challenges, candidates should actively seek feedback, prioritize open communication with their mentors, and take initiative in problem-solving. Building strong relationships with team members and demonstrating adaptability can also help accelerate growth and success in the program.

  • Ensure consistent execution of retail standards across all locations.
  • Maintain a strong focus on customer experience, operational discipline, and compliance.
  • Drive a customer‑focused culture across all locations, with accountability for customer feedback, online reputation (including Google reviews), and consistent, high‑quality in‑store experiences.

  • Build and maintain a strong internal talent pipeline across the district.
  • Identify high‑potential team members and create clear paths for development and promotion.
  • Partner with People Ops and Talent team to manage performance, address issues early, and support leadership growth.
Adult Use Readiness and Market Transition
  • Lead district‑wide readiness for adult use expansion, including operational planning, team capability, and execution standards.
  • Ensure AYR SOPs are thoughtfully crafted to reflect market‑specific requirements and are effectively implemented across all locations.
  • Prepare store teams to transition from a medical‑only model to a higher‑volume, dual‑channel environment.
  • Identify gaps in staffing, processes, and execution, and build scalable solutions ahead of launch.
  • Partner cross‑functionally to align retail, compliance, marketing, people operations, and asset protection in preparation for adult use.
  • Ensure a smooth and compliant transition at launch, maintaining performance, customer experience, and operational control.
  • Set clear expectations for pace, productivity, and execution as the market evolves.
Regulatory Operations (VA‑Specific)
  • Ensure all locations meet state‑specific regulatory requirements, including pharmacist coverage ratios and credentialed staff.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to lead high‑volume cannabis retail operations in both medical and adult‑use environments, managing dual‑channel complexity and evolving state regulatory requirements.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to plan, prioritize, and deliver results.
  • Experience leading teams through growth, change, or operational transformation.
  • Ability to scale operations and teams in advance of increased demand and complexity.
  • Strong understanding of retail performance drivers, customer experience, and team development.
  • Ability to partner cross‑functionally and lead through ambiguity in evolving environments.
Education
