Position: Girlstart After School Program Leader

Reports to: Program Coordinator

Classification: Paid, Part-Time, 5-8 hours/week

About Girlstart

Founded in 1997, Girlstart is dedicated to empowering girls through STEM while creating an inclusive environment that benefits all students. Our innovative, nationally recognized STEM education programs include After School, week-long Summer Camps, Community STEM Programs, and annual Girls in STEM Conferences held in multiple cities across Texas and the Boston, MA area. Our goal is to encourage every child to be brave, creative, and curious through hands-on STEM activities, career exploration, and inspiration from real women in STEM.

Job Description

Inspire girls to take on the world's greatest challenges! Girlstart is seeking After School Program Leaders (called STEM CREW --Creative, Resourceful, Empowered Workforce) to lead our fun, hands-on, STEM-focused After School programs in Houston, specifically in Alief ISD, Lamar Consolidated ISD, and Ft. Bend ISD. After School programs meet once a week for an hour (programs vary from 1-1.5 hours) immediately after the school day. The purpose of our After School program is to provide 20-25 students with a fun STEM enrichment program that builds confidence and encourages them to pursue paths to higher education and to discover greater career opportunities. Girlstart is designed to build students' skills in collaboration, creative problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Program leaders will be trained by the program coordinators/managers. Houston Program Leaders will also report to the Houston Program Coordinator for details about after school clubs, hours in the office, and/or additional hours provided.

Commitment & Days and Times

We prefer After School Program Leaders be available 2 afternoons (Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays--limited Friday options), a week to lead 2 programs.* Potential Program Leaders need to be available around 2 pm on program days; programs typically run from 3:00-4:00 pm at respective elementary schools.

Girlstart's After School Program Leader commitment is 5-8 hours/week. Leading 2 After School programs is approximately a 6-hour weekly commitment, which includes being prepared for the lesson, driving to location, leading the activity, and cleaning up. In addition to the 6 hours, Program Leaders are encouraged to have 1-2 office hours to practice, pack materials, and ask questions about the activity and/or classroom management. Office hours once per week and are located at Girlstart's Houston office.

Mandatory on-going training provided throughout position.
*The number of clubs a Program Leader is assigned will depend on Girlstart's needs each semester.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with kids preferred
  • Desire to empower and educate students in STEM
  • Reliable transportation, driving to and from respective programs is required for the position
  • Comfortable presenting to a group of students
  • Classroom management skills helpful
  • Proficient using Google Drive apps
  • Strong time management skills
  • All majors welcome (STEM background not required)
