Osborn Engineering is seeking a Substation Electrical Engineer with 10+ Years experience for our Cleveland, Columbus, Michigan or Pittsburgh office location who will report to the Director of Power Engineering. The ideal candidate would have strong working knowledge of Electrical design in the Consulting Engineering environment.

A Senior Electrical Power Engineer creates, analyzes, and optimizes high-voltage (HV) and medium voltage (MV) substation layouts, including physical design, protection, and control systems. They are responsible for preparing technical specifications, Bill of Materials (BOM), site plans, and ensuring compliance with safety standards like IEEE/IEC.

Position Responsibilities

  • Develop and revise drawings for one-lines, physical arrangements, grounding systems, conduit layouts, lighting, lightning protection, and rigid bus analysis using client-specific AutoCAD or other software.
  • Create physical layouts and substation designs that integrate with protection and control drawings.
  • Develop project criteria and design specifications, including the overall bill of materials.
  • Perform substation engineering calculations including ground grid design, rigid bus analysis, and auxiliary system sizing (AC/DC load, batteries, chargers) in SKM or similar software.
  • Design and size conduit and high/medium voltage conductor.
  • Select and specify transformers, switchgear, and protective devices.
  • Coordinate with structural, civil, and protection and control (P&C) teams.
  • Ensure designs follow industry standards ( NESC, IEEE,IEC) and environmental regulations
  • Meet with vendors to determine specification requirements for application.  
  • Coordinate with other disciplines for all Electrical design elements.
  • Prepare design deliverables for SD,DD,CD level documents
  • Provide cost opinions for budgeting construction, and reviewing contractor change orders
  • Perform project construction administration including response to RFI’s and accurate review of submittals.
  • Attend meetings with clients, authorities having jurisdiction, and other professionals as projects require. 
  • Work planning and managing the design process to the available hours in the work plan.
  • Familiar with utility specific details, components and drawing production

    Job Requirements/Qualifications

    • 10+ Years of experience in Electrical Substation Design in Consulting Engineering.
    • Working knowledge of design and analysis software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SKM, ETAP, Easypower, Microstaion, WinGIS, CYME, and CGEGS.
    • Knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA,NESC,IEEE,IEC.
    • Experience with electrical system studies such as short circuit, over-current device coordination, and Arc Flash Hazard analysis per NPFA 70E, battery sizing, voltage drop calculations, etcKnowledge of standard construction practices and the ability to work with contractors to address construction issues.
    • Coordinate with technical leads and senior engineers when specialized assistance is needed on design.
    • Ability to work and manage tasks on several projects concurrently
    • Ability to work off hours.
    • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering Preferred.
    • PE License Preferred.
    • Experience with 3D CAD software (Inventor, P4I, etc.) Preferred.
    • Experience supporting IOUs such as FE, PPL, Dominion, Duke Energy, CPP, or AEP is a plus.
    • Experience with SDS (Substation Design Suite) Preferred.
    • Proficiency with marking up drawings digitally and understanding of CAD application
    • Strong understanding of substation equipment and configurations such as AIS, transformer banks, ring bus, breaker-and-a-half, etc.
