Job description

Job Title: Laboratory TechnicianJob Description

The Laboratory Technician supports plant tissue sampling and processing in field and greenhouse environments and contributes to high-quality research operations. This role manages tissue sample tracking systems, assists with insect bioassays and experimental studies, and partners closely with greenhouse and assay leads to ensure accurate data collection, efficient workflows, and timely sample submission for downstream analytical testing.

Responsibilities

  • Support plant tissue sampling and processing in both field and greenhouse environments, including tissue collection, lyophilization, sample weighing, equipment cleaning, laboratory organization, inventory management, and preparation of samples for downstream analytical testing.
  • Maintain and manage tissue sample tracking systems and databases to ensure accurate sample identification, documentation, and traceability.
  • Collaborate with research scientists, expression laboratories, and field teams to facilitate timely sample submission and efficient data flow.
  • Partner with the Greenhouse Lead to execute routine greenhouse operations, including tissue sampling and submission, plant movement and organization, maintenance, and housekeeping activities that support research objectives.
  • Assist the Assay Lead with insect bioassays and experimental studies, including assay setup, execution, data collection, and documentation.
  • Contribute to assay development, optimization, and continuous improvement efforts in both laboratory and greenhouse settings.
  • Provide operational support for laboratory assays and experiments by coordinating with team leads to plan and execute weekly research activities.
  • Assist with laboratory upkeep and equipment maintenance, implementing best practices to ensure efficient and high-quality research operations.
  • Support field research activities as needed, including tissue sample collection, trial support, and other research-related tasks that contribute to the successful execution of Trait Performance programs.

Essential Skills

  • Experience working in a laboratory, greenhouse, and/or agricultural field research environment.
  • Experience collecting, processing, and tracking biological samples.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, and data management tools.
  • Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail and the ability to accurately manage large numbers of samples and associated data.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks associated with greenhouse and field research, including standing, lifting, carrying materials, and working in varying environmental conditions.
  • Knowledge or experience in GMP, microbiology, wet chemistry, quality assurance, laboratory practices, chemistry, and biology.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Plant Science, Agronomy, Biology, Biotechnology, Entomology, Genetics, Crop Science, or a related life sciences field.
  • Familiarity with plant tissue handling, lyophilization, and preparation of samples for analytical testing.
  • Experience working with insect bioassays or similar experimental studies.
  • Comfort working with databases and sample tracking systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow standard operating procedures and implement best practices in laboratory and greenhouse environments.

Work Environment

This role operates in both laboratory and greenhouse settings, with occasional work in field research environments. The position follows a regular schedule of Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The work involves handling plant tissues and biological samples, operating laboratory equipment, and supporting greenhouse operations such as plant movement and maintenance. The environment may include varying temperatures, humidity levels, and outdoor conditions typical of greenhouse and field research. The role requires standing for extended periods, lifting and carrying materials, and maintaining a clean, organized, and safety-focused workspace while collaborating closely with research teams.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
