Job description

Deseret Cattle & Citrus is seeking a reliable Cowboy to join our ranch team!
Summary:
The Cowboy I is responsible for supporting day-to-day livestock operations under direct supervision. This position performs routine tasks related to animal care, land management, and ranch maintenance. The Cowboy follows established procedures and receives guidance from the Unit Manager and more experienced cowboys.
Responsibilities:
  • Assist in daily cattle care including feeding, watering, and monitoring herd health.
  • Ensure consistent access to clean water, maintain pasture fencing, and manage forage and supplementation to meet nutritional and performance goals.
  • Observe livestock for signs of injury, illness, or stress and report concerns promptly.
  • Support cattle handling activities such as rotating, gathering, sorting, branding, and shipping.
  • Support basic pasture and land maintenance (fence repair, water checks, equipment upkeep).
  • Maintain a safe working environment by following all safety policies and procedures.
  • Complete assigned tasks accurately and timely under supervision.
  • Assist other team members as needed to meet operational goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education in animal science, agriculture, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of hands-on experience in cattle care, herd management, or livestock operations.
  • Basic understanding of cattle nutrition, health, and development phases.
  • Capable of performing essential animal husbandry procedures, including castration, euthanasia, vaccination, dehorning, ear tagging, ear notching, branding, and blood sampling.
  • Ability to operate basic farm equipment and perform routine maintenance.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Working conditions:
  • Regular lifting up to ~50 lbs; prolonged standing and walking; frequent bending, crouching, climbing, and kneeling; frequent hand use for tools and animal handling; sufficient vision and hearing to monitor livestock health; regular physical exertion.
  • Primarily outdoor ranch environments; exposure to all weather conditions; uneven terrain; dust, dander, manure; variable noise; frequent interaction with large animals and equipment; variable hours including early mornings, weekends, and holidays; PPE required as applicable.
