Job description

Job Summary - Why you'll love this position
Job Location: Springfield, Missouri area (applicant must reside in or be willing to relocate to this area). Position will be located in the Springfield Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory building, 701 N Miller Road, Springfield, Mo 65801.
Salary: $15.00/HR.
Duration: September 2026 - May 2027 (Approximately 20-30 hours per week)

The Animal Health Diagnostic labs operate under the direction of the State Veterinarian. The division of Animal Health plays a crucial role for the Missouri Department of Agriculture and our labs help us to detect, control and eradicate livestock diseases that threaten the profitability, movement, and marketability of Missouri's livestock and livestock products. The Springfield laboratory also conducts meat and meat product testing for the Missouri Meat Inspection Program as well as milk and milk product testing for the State Milk Board.
We are looking for a part time/temporary Administrative Support Assistant to fill a critical role at our Springfield laboratory. If you have a passion for agriculture, like interacting with people and want to make a difference every day in the lives of Missourians, this may be the job for you!
Responsibilities - What you'll do
  • Perform customer service by answering phone calls, replying to emails, and greeting visitors to the lab.
  • Operate a multi-line phone system.
  • Maintain a customer contact log and complaint log.
  • Assist with receiving, accessioning, and distributing daily sample submissions throughout the lab.
  • Perform data entry for some sample submissions to the lab.
  • Prepare, ship, and invoice customer supply orders.
  • Scan, file, and archive daily bench records, submission forms, and worksheets from the lab.
  • Assist with the distribution of client reports and Coggins reports via email, fax, and USPS.
  • Assist with scanning and sending invoices and packing slips to the billing department daily.
  • Assist with maintaining an inventory of office supplies and request orders as needed.
  • Maintain lab safety at all times by following safe handling and quality control processes and wearing proper protective gear. This includes maintaining a sterile lab environment to avoid any cross-contamination of specimens and samples.
  • Participate in meetings and record meeting minutes.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications - All you need for success
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Missouri Driver License.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other software applications in the performance of duties.
  • Ability to use 10-key keypad.
  • Ability to be both a productive individual and team member.
  • Ability to represent the department in a professional manner.
  • Ability to multi-task, identify and prioritize tasks, standardize procedures, and provide feedback to the program.
  • Ability to work as a team with scientists and managers.
  • Ability to work independently and complete task in a high volume, fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Excellent attention to detail and high-level organizational skills, as well as possess the ability to multitask and manage time effectively.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills that will foster a team environment.
  • Excellent computer skills, data entry skills, report generating skills, and knowledge of LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) and Ideagen Quality systems (Qualtrax).
  • Knowledge of animal agriculture industry or agriculture related field.
