JOB PURPOSE

The Merchant Services Officer (MSO) is responsible for driving new business development, sales growth, and revenue generation through the delivery of merchant card payment solutions to business clients. This role serves as a trusted advisor to commercial and business customers by identifying payment processing needs, recommending customized solutions, and delivering exceptional service throughout the client lifecycle.

The MSO develops and maintains strong partnerships with Retail Banking, Treasury Management, Commercial Banking, and external referral sources to generate qualified opportunities and expand market penetration. Additionally, the role is responsible for retaining and growing an existing merchant portfolio through proactive relationship management, consultative support, and ongoing client engagement.

Success in this position requires a highly motivated sales professional with strong business development skills, industry knowledge, and the ability to effectively collaborate across multiple business lines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Drive new business development and achieve monthly, quarterly, and annual merchant services sales, revenue, and portfolio growth objectives.

• Develop and execute market-specific sales strategies through prospecting, networking, referral partnerships, and collaboration with internal banking partners.

• Conduct consultative discovery conversations to assess client payment processing needs and recommend customized merchant services and payment solutions.

• Prepare and present pricing proposals, solution recommendations, and product demonstrations that align with client business objectives.

• Manage the complete sales cycle, including prospecting, proposal development, closing, onboarding, implementation and initial client training.

• Build and maintain strong referral relationships with Retail Banking, Treasury Management, Commercial Banking, Business Banking, and other internal partners to maximize revenue opportunities.

• Identify opportunities to expand client relationships by cross-selling bank products and services and referring qualified leads to appropriate business partners.

• Serve as the merchant services subject matter expert for assigned markets while providing ongoing education and support to internal partners.

• Manage and grow an assigned portfolio of merchant services clients through proactive relationship management, account reviews, and strategic client engagement.

• Respond to client inquiries, resolve service issues, and deliver a high level of customer service to support customer satisfaction and retention.

• Maintain comprehensive knowledge of merchant services products, payment technologies, industry trends, banking services, and regulatory requirements.

• Maintain accurate sales activity, pipeline, client, and portfolio records while supporting departmental initiatives and strategic objectives.

• Collaborate effectively with department team members, vendors, processors, and service providers to ensure a seamless customer experience and successful implementation of solutions.

• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.


CONTACTS

Daily contact with existing and potential merchant customers. Frequent contact with the TMO team member, branch partners, business banking officers, supervisor, and other bank employees. Frequent contact with program vendors and service providers. Occasional contact with regulators and auditors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Marketing, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Minimum of three (5) years of successful sales experience.

• Minimum of three (5) years of experience within a financial institution or banking environment.

• Demonstrated ability to develop and close new business opportunities.

• Strong consultative selling, negotiation, and relationship management skills.

• Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.

• Exceptional customer service and problem-solving abilities.

• Ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and CRM platforms.

• Demonstrated leadership, coaching, planning, and organizational skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience in Merchant Services, Payment Processing, Treasury Management, or Commercial Payments.

• Knowledge of point-of-sale systems, card processing solutions, payment gateways, and emerging payment technologies.

• Strong understanding of commercial banking products and services.

• Bilingual language skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Office setting with moderately varied desk-oriented activity, with fatigue being relieved by opportunities to stand and move around in a comfortable environment. Frequent motor vehicle travel required. Occasional lifting and carrying of equipment and materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
