Job description

Job Title: Medical Lab Scientist – Blood Bank

Location: Indianapolis, IN

Duration: 13-Week Contract

Schedule:

  • Evening Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
    OR
  • Night Shift: 11:00 PM – 7:30 AM
  • Flexible start times available for 10-hour shifts

Guaranteed Hours: 40 Hours Weekly

Compensation:

  • Traveler Pay: $44–$47/hour ($1,760–$1,880/week) based on experience
  • Local Pay: $37–$40/hour ($1,480–$1,600/week) based on experience
Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist with Blood Bank expertise to join a high-volume transfusion services laboratory. The ideal candidate will perform routine and specialized blood bank testing, compatibility studies, and blood component preparation while supporting the transfusion needs of both adult and pediatric patient populations. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

Responsibilities
  • Perform blood bank testing and compatibility procedures in accordance with laboratory standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening, antibody identification, and antibody typing.
  • Perform immediate spin, IgG, and electronic crossmatches.
  • Conduct indirect Coombs testing and other immunohematology procedures.
  • Process and evaluate patient specimens accurately and efficiently.
  • Prepare, issue, and manage blood products for transfusion.
  • Investigate and resolve transfusion-related discrepancies and complex serologic cases.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory documentation and patient records.
  • Perform quality control, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, accreditation, and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with pathologists, physicians, and healthcare professionals to support patient care.
  • Provide timely and accurate laboratory results to support critical clinical decisions.
Required QualificationsEducation
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related field required for MLS candidates.
Licensure & Certifications
  • ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Certification required or
  • ASCP Blood Bank (BB) Certification required.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) candidates may be considered if they possess:
    • ASCP-MLT Certification
    • ASCP-BB Certification
    • Significant blood bank experience in a large-volume facility
Experience
  • Blood Bank experience required.
  • Experience in high-volume transfusion services environments preferred.
  • First-time travelers accepted.
  • Ability to work independently, particularly on evening or night shifts.
  • Experience supporting both adult and pediatric patient populations preferred.
Skills & Competencies
  • Strong proficiency in specimen processing and laboratory workflow management.
  • Experience performing:
    • ABO/Rh Testing
    • Antibody Screening and Identification
    • Antibody Typing (Tube Method)
    • Immediate Spin Crossmatching
    • IgG Crossmatching
    • Electronic Crossmatching
    • Indirect Coombs Testing
  • Strong understanding of immunohematology principles and blood bank operations.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and efficiency in a high-volume laboratory.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to quality assurance, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.
