Job description

IDEXX is seeking an experienced and innovative Senior Upstream Bioprocess Scientist to join our Assay Design and Development team. In this role, you will provide scientific leadership for reagent and biologics development programs supporting IDEXX's diagnostic products. You will contribute deep expertise in biologics process development while collaborating across R&D, Operations, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, and external partners to advance high-impact projects from concept through implementation.

This position is ideal for a scientist who combines strong technical expertise with a collaborative mindset and enjoys solving complex problems that directly influence product performance, manufacturability, and business outcomes.

This is an on-site role to be based out of our Westbrook, ME corporate Headquarters.

As a Senior Bioprocess Scientist, you will play a key role in developing and advancing biological reagents that support IDEXX's Companion Animal Group. You will work on technically challenging programs, help identify practical and scalable solutions, and contribute to the continuous advancement of scientific capabilities within the organization.

Success in this role requires both scientific rigor and the ability to influence across functions, helping teams navigate technical challenges and deliver results in a regulated environment.

In this role:
  • You will lead development and optimization of biologics production processes to support new product development and lifecycle management initiatives.

  • You will evaluate and implement technologies, methods, and approaches that improve reagent quality, process robustness, scalability, and operational efficiency.

  • You will design and execute experiments, interpret complex data sets, and recommend data-driven technical decisions.

  • You will contribute throughout the product development lifecycle, including feasibility assessment, process development, verification and validation activities, and investigations.

  • You will collaborate closely with cross-functional partners including R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Supply Chain, Program Management, and external partners.

  • You will support preparation of technical documentation and regulatory submissions associated with biologics manufacturing and product development activities.

  • You will serve as a technical resource and mentor to scientists and engineers across the organization.

  • You will monitor scientific and industry developments and recommend opportunities to strengthen IDEXX capabilities and competitive position.

What you need to succeed:
  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Bioprocess Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, or a related fieldwith 0-3years of relevant industry experience; or Master's degreein above disciplines with 8+ yearsof relevant industry experience.

  • Demonstrated expertise in mammalian biologics process development, including experience with one or more protein production platforms is required.

  • Experience supporting development, scale-up, transfer, and/or commercialization of biologics manufacturing processes in a regulated environment is required.

  • Strong technical problem-solving skills with the ability to design experiments, analyze data, and develop practical solutions to complex challenges is required.

  • Experience managing or leading technically complex projects involving multiple stakeholders is required.

  • Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and influence decisions through scientific expertise is required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation and scientific presentations.

  • Proficiency with statistical analysis and scientific data interpretation.

  • Experience supporting recombinant proteins, monoclonal antibodies, polyclonal antibodies, or other biological reagents is preferred.

  • Working knowledge of veterinary biologics regulations or other regulated biologics development environments is preferred.

  • Experience with process characterization, technology transfer, validation, or commercial manufacturing support is preferred.

  • Familiarity with Quality by Design (QbD), Design of Experiments (DoE), and risk-based development approaches is preferred.

  • Experience working with external partners, contract research organizations, or contract manufacturing organizations is preferred.

  • Experience with data analytics or advanced modeling approaches applied to bioprocess development is preferred.
