Senior Counsel - Independent Agency, Sales & Service

GEICO is looking for an experienced legal professional to lead the legal guidance for GEICO's growing independent agent and captive agent business selling personal and commercial insurance. Experience with agency distribution, sales, and service programs for both personal and commercial insurance products is required. In addition to providing great day-to-day legal advice and customer service for the agency distribution and sales and service business units, your role will be to help develop and execute novel and cutting-edge ways of distributing insurance through our independent and captive agents. You'll do this by building a strong relationship with GEICO's agency, distribution, sales, and service teams to understand their goals and plans, then collaborating to provide legal advice on how to achieve their objectives. As you see where your clients are headed, you'll also advise them on future risks and opportunities. When your clients need additional legal expertise, you'll coordinate with your colleagues in other divisions of the legal department to make sure your clients get the support they need to excel.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Working independently and with some supervisory responsibilities, understand all key business objectives and means of accomplishing them for supported business units, ensuring compliance with applicable insurance regulations while driving toward business success

  • Serve as lead attorney for agency, distribution, sales, and service work and anticipate their future legal needs

  • Collaborate with other legal teams as needed

  • Provide legal guidance related to independent and captive agent topics, distribution, sales, and servicing of insurance

  • Use wide range of legal knowledge to issue and spot any implications of business choices that could interact with multiple legal subject areas such as privacy, insurance compliance, consumer-protection laws, insurance products, intellectual property, and contractual obligations

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must have at least 8 years of experience at a law firm or in-house and preferably at least 6 years in-house advising on the following: independent agent and/or captive agent legal and business topics, insurance distribution, sales and service of insurance

  • Knowledge in consumer-protection laws, customer service or user experience, insurance sales/distribution, and insurance underwriting

  • Must have a law degree and an active law license to practice in the United States of America

  • Strong listening and communication skills

  • Ability to quickly digest and understand business plans, processes, and procedures

  • Ability to provide legal advice with incomplete information

  • Superb judgement about legal and legal-adjacent risks as well as mitigation opportunities

  • Must be solution oriented

  • Must have demonstrated experience solving business problems and advancing business metrics

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with B2B relationship management (as business partners, not vendors)

  • Proven success working on novel and emerging issues

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with both internal clients and external business partners

  • Ability to identify opportunities for enhancements or improvements and assist in implementation of creative solutions

  • Experience providing legal support on distributing insurance or other regulated products through third parties

Location: Hybrid - This position requires the individual to work 3 days onsite at our Bethesda, MD, New York City, NY, or Cleveland, OH locations.

Annual Salary

$148,625.00 - $260,350.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate's work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
