What is management?

Management is the process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling resources, including people, finances, and materials, to achieve organizational goals efficiently and effectively. Managers set objectives, coordinate activities, and make strategic decisions to guide teams and organizations toward success. Effective management involves communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills to motivate employees and ensure operations run smoothly.

What are different careers in management?

Different careers in management include specialized technical positions, such as being a project manager, as well as HR or first-line managers who hire and train employees at a company and oversee the daily operations of the employees. As a manager, your duties differ depending on the field in which you work and the specific responsibilities you have. For example, a project manager typically takes over on a specific project, such as an engineering or software development project. You assemble a team, plan a budget and timeline, and keep workers on track throughout the project. HR managers, on the other hand, interview and hire employees and ensure that productivity and performance remain high.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in management, and why are they important?

To thrive in Management, you need strong leadership abilities, strategic planning skills, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with project management tools, budgeting software, and performance tracking systems is typically required. Excellent communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution are vital soft skills for effectively leading teams. These competencies are crucial to drive organizational success, motivate employees, and achieve business goals.

What are some common challenges managers face when leading a diverse team, and how can they address them?

Managers often encounter challenges such as communication barriers, varying work styles, and differing cultural expectations when leading diverse teams. Successfully addressing these challenges involves fostering an inclusive environment, promoting open communication, and providing clear expectations. Regular team meetings, cultural competency training, and encouraging feedback can help managers build trust and ensure all team members feel valued. Emphasizing collaboration and recognizing individual strengths also contribute to better team performance and morale.

Assistant Property Manager
ESRA Management LLC • Harlem, NYC • Full-Time
$70,000 – $85,000 per year • Health Insurance • Paid Time Off

About ESRA Management LLC

ESRA Management LLC is a full-service real estate management company founded in 1925 — and we are still here, still growing, and still committed to the communities we serve. Rooted in Harlem and Northern Manhattan, we manage a portfolio of cooperatives, condominiums, and multifamily residential buildings across three boroughs of New York City.
We are continuously growing our business year after year and are preparing for more growth.
The Role

The Assistant Property Manager (APM) works directly under the Property Manager and is a core member of the building operations team. This is a hands-on role that touches every part of day-to-day property management — from resident relations and vendor coordination to compliance, collections, and administrative oversight.
The right candidate does not wait to be told what to do. They see what needs to happen, communicate proactively, and take pride in keeping operations running without gaps. If you are organized, people-oriented, and driven by solving problems rather than avoiding them, this role is for you.
What You’ll Do

Resident Relations & Communication

•       Serve as a primary point of contact for resident inquiries, concerns, and complaints — responding with professionalism and urgency
•       Communicate proactively with tenants on building updates, maintenance schedules, and policy matters
•       Address and escalate issues appropriately, ensuring no concern falls through the cracks
 Operations & Maintenance Coordination

•       Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and building staff to facilitate repairs, maintenance, landscaping, and building services
•       Inspect property conditions regularly and flag issues before they escalate
•       Track open work orders and ensure timely completion and follow-up
 Administrative & Financial

•       Collect monthly rent and fees; maintain accurate records of payments and rental activity
•       Manage resident files, lease renewals, property registrations, and compliance documentation
•       Support budgeting, accounts payable tracking, and financial reporting under PM direction
•       Assist with advertising, unit showings, and applicant coordination
 Compliance & Reporting

•       Maintain awareness of local housing regulations, anti-discrimination laws, and agency requirements (HPD, DOB, DHCR)
•       Report all material issues, violations, or concerns to the Property Manager promptly and completely
•       Support the Property Manager in preparing owner/board communications and reports
 What We’re Looking For

Skills & Attributes

•       Strong communicator — written, verbal, and across platforms (email, text, property management software)
•       Highly organized with sharp attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities
•       Customer-service mindset — you genuinely care about the experience of the people you serve
•       Problem-solver by instinct: you diagnose issues and move toward solutions, not away from them
•       Conflict resolution skills — calm, professional, and effective under pressure
•       Understanding of NYC housing and anti-discrimination laws
•       Bilingual English/Spanish a strong plus
 Education & Experience

•       High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree in business, real estate, or related field preferred
•       Prior experience in property management, residential real estate, or a customer-facing administrative role
•       Proficiency in Microsoft Office and property management software (required)
•       Basic bookkeeping skills
•       Computer proficiency and comfort navigating productivity software (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or equivalent)
 Why Join ESRA

•       A company with 100 years of institutional history and a growth trajectory that is creating real opportunity
•       Work that connects to community — our portfolio sits at the heart of Harlem and Upper Manhattan
•       Direct mentorship from an experienced Property Manager
•       A team culture built on communication, accountability, and getting things done
•       Competitive compensation with health insurance and paid time off
 To Apply

Submit your resume and a brief note on why this role fits where you are in your career. We review every application and will reach out to candidates whose background aligns with what we’re building.
