What is management?

Management is the process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling resources, including people, finances, and materials, to achieve organizational goals efficiently and effectively. Managers set objectives, coordinate activities, and make strategic decisions to guide teams and organizations toward success. Effective management involves communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills to motivate employees and ensure operations run smoothly.

What are different careers in management?

Different careers in management include specialized technical positions, such as being a project manager, as well as HR or first-line managers who hire and train employees at a company and oversee the daily operations of the employees. As a manager, your duties differ depending on the field in which you work and the specific responsibilities you have. For example, a project manager typically takes over on a specific project, such as an engineering or software development project. You assemble a team, plan a budget and timeline, and keep workers on track throughout the project. HR managers, on the other hand, interview and hire employees and ensure that productivity and performance remain high.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in management, and why are they important?

To thrive in Management, you need strong leadership abilities, strategic planning skills, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with project management tools, budgeting software, and performance tracking systems is typically required. Excellent communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution are vital soft skills for effectively leading teams. These competencies are crucial to drive organizational success, motivate employees, and achieve business goals.

What are some common challenges managers face when leading a diverse team, and how can they address them?

Managers often encounter challenges such as communication barriers, varying work styles, and differing cultural expectations when leading diverse teams. Successfully addressing these challenges involves fostering an inclusive environment, promoting open communication, and providing clear expectations. Regular team meetings, cultural competency training, and encouraging feedback can help managers build trust and ensure all team members feel valued. Emphasizing collaboration and recognizing individual strengths also contribute to better team performance and morale.

Lead the delivery of transformative energy projects shaping the future of North America's energy landscape. ERM is seeking a Managing Consultant, Project Manager based in the Gulf Coast region (Louisiana) to join our growing Capital Project Delivery Team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced consulting professional who thrives at the intersection of project leadership, environmental permitting, and strategic client advisory services. In this highly visible, client-facing role, you will help guide complex capital projects from concept through delivery, supporting some of the most significant investments across the oil and gas, LNG, power, renewable energy, low carbon, and energy transition sectors. If you're looking to expand your influence, lead multidisciplinary teams, and contribute to projects that are redefining the country's energy future, this role offers the platform to do just that.

Why This Role Matters? As organizations invest in critical infrastructure and energy transition initiatives, successful project delivery depends on strong leadership, regulatory expertise, and effective risk management. In this role, you will serve as a trusted advisor to clients, helping them navigate complex permitting processes, environmental impact assessments, and project delivery challenges while advancing sustainable and responsible development. You will play a key role in strengthening ERM's presence within the Diversified Energy sector, managing highโ€‘profile projects, supporting business growth, and collaborating with experts across ERM's national Low Carbon Energy Transition (LCET) network. Your work will directly contribute to both project success and ERM's broader global strategy.

What Your Impact Is
  • Lead the successful delivery of capital development projects across the energy sector by managing scope, schedules, budgets, quality, and project risk.
  • Provide strategic permitting and environmental impact assessment guidance for complex infrastructure and energy projects.
  • Serve as a trusted client advisor throughout project lifecycles, from proposal development through project execution and delivery.
  • Support the advancement of low carbon and energy transition projects that are reshaping the industry.
  • Strengthen client relationships while identifying opportunities to expand services and support commercial growth.
  • Help develop and mentor team members while contributing to a collaborative, high-performing project environment.
  • Influence the successful delivery of projects involving oil and gas pipelines, LNG facilities, low carbon capital development, solar, onshore wind, offshore wind, energy storage, and transmission.
What You'll Bring
  • Required Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in either a consulting environment or working substantially within the energy sector.
  • Demonstrated project management and leadership skills.
  • Experience managing projects with multidisciplinary teams and balancing multiple priorities, workstreams, and deadlines.
  • Experience managing and performing multi-media permitting associated with capital development projects.
  • Strong understanding of local, state, and federal permitting requirements and regulatory processes.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the energy regulatory environment, key regulatory agencies, and current and emerging issues.
  • Strong analytical, technical writing, presentation, and client communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality work products.
  • Ability to work independently while leading project teams and driving project execution.
  • Experience supporting commercial success through identifying client opportunities, proposal development, and cross-selling multidisciplinary services.
  • Experience with line management and/or contributing to the professional development of team members.
  • Enthusiasm, initiative, flexibility, and a desire to work within a growing team.
Preferred
  • Preferred 7+ years of experience in either a consulting environment or working substantially within the energy sector.
  • Impact Assessment expertise, including NEPA EA/EIS, FERC, or similar agency experience.
  • USACE and NEPA expertise, including experience with FERC permitting and EIS development.
  • Familiarity with Texas and Louisiana state permitting requirements.
  • ESHIA (Environmental, Social, and Health Impact Assessment) experience.
  • Understanding of ERM's Diversified Energy Sector and the companies operating in this market, including existing relationships that can be leveraged into new business.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support and help manage large, complex, multidisciplinary, and global projects.
  • Demonstrate strong project management leadership throughout the project lifecycle, including project scoping, budget management, scheduling, and delivery oversight.
  • Manage and perform multi-media permitting associated with capital development projects, with an emphasis on local, state, and federal permitting requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations administered by agencies such as: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM)
  • Provide technical, subject matter, and project management expertise related to:

  • Due diligence reviews
  • Environmental critical issues assessments
  • Impact assessment deliverables
  • Quality control reviews
  • Apply strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills to complex project challenges.
  • Prepare and deliver high-quality technical reports, presentations, and client communications.
  • Build and maintain strong, trusted relationships with clients and business partners.
  • Contribute to proposal development, project pursuits, and broader business development initiatives.
  • Collaborate across ERM's regional and national teams, including the Low Carbon Energy Transition (LCET) practice, to identify opportunities and deliver integrated client solutions.
Driver's License Required

This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area. This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.
