Maker Lab information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Maker Lab Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Maker Lab Technician, you need a solid understanding of fabrication techniques, prototyping, and basic engineering or design principles, often supported by a relevant technical degree or hands-on experience. Familiarity with tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, and software like CAD is typically required, along with safety certifications. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with users and troubleshooting projects. These skills enable safe, efficient, and innovative operations in the lab, supporting diverse projects and user needs.

What is the difference between Maker Lab vs Fabricator?

AspectMaker LabFabricator
CredentialsOften no formal certifications required; focus on skills and creativityMay require technical certifications or experience in manufacturing
Work EnvironmentCreative spaces, workshops, educational settingsIndustrial facilities, manufacturing plants
Industry UsageEducation, prototyping, DIY projectsMass production, custom fabrication
Common Search IntentLearning, prototyping, hobbyist projectsProduction, custom manufacturing

Maker Labs are typically creative, educational spaces focused on prototyping and DIY projects, often with minimal formal credentials. Fabricators work in industrial settings, handling large-scale manufacturing and requiring technical skills or certifications. While Maker Labs emphasize innovation and learning, fabricators focus on production efficiency and technical precision.

What is a Maker Lab?

A Maker Lab is a collaborative workspace where people with shared interests—such as technology, engineering, crafts, or digital fabrication—can gather to work on projects, share knowledge, and use specialized tools and equipment. These labs often provide access to resources like 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics, and woodworking tools that might be too expensive or impractical for individuals to own. Maker Labs are popular in schools, libraries, and community centers, encouraging hands-on learning and innovation. They are open to people of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced makers.

What are some typical responsibilities and challenges faced by professionals working in a Maker Lab environment?

Professionals in a Maker Lab are often responsible for maintaining equipment like 3D printers and laser cutters, assisting users with project design and execution, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols. A common challenge is balancing hands-on technical support with project management, especially when multiple users require assistance simultaneously. Maker Lab staff frequently collaborate with students, educators, or community members, requiring strong communication and problem-solving skills. Additionally, staying updated with evolving technologies and teaching best practices are key aspects of the role.

Job description

At Carbon, our mission goes beyond 3D printing. We are enabling creators everywhere to make what the world needs, right now. Our company is built on the idea that diverse fields of study must come together to solve intractable problems. We have grand ambitions to create technology that will influence industry around the world. You will be joining a diverse team with a vibrant culture, where team success is as important as celebrating individual contributions.
Help us change the world and we will help you change yours.
We're looking for a curious, hands-on Materials Lab Technician to join Carbon's Materials team. This is an entry-level role built for someone who wants to learn the fundamentals of polymer formulation and materials testing in a fast-moving additive manufacturing environment. You'll work closely with our scientists day-to-day, helping move formulation projects forward while keeping our lab running smoothly and safely.
This role is onsite 5 days per week at our Sunnyvale, CA location. This role is not eligible for relocation, nor eligible for current Visa sponsorship.
What You'll Do
  • Formulation Support: Assist scientists with the preparation, weighing, and mixing of resin formulations following strict written protocols.
  • Sample Preparation: Prepare samples for testing, which includes 3D printing, post-processing, and standard specimen preparation.
  • Testing & Analysis: Set up, run, and record results from routine materials tests (including mechanical, thermal, and rheological testing).
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate, up-to-date lab notebooks and digital data records.
  • Inventory & Lab Ops: Monitor and organize lab consumables and reagents; proactively flag restocking needs and help maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace.
  • Equipment Care: Clean, calibrate, and perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance on lab equipment.
  • Safety Compliance: Strict adherence to all lab safety procedures, chemical handling guidelines, and hazardous waste disposal protocols.
    • Hazardous Waste: Ensure all wastes are properly labeled with waste type, date of accumulation and any mandatory hazardous signals.

What We're Looking For
  • High school diploma or equivalent; coursework or an Associate's/Bachelor's degree in chemistry, materials science, or a related field is a plus, but not required.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow technical written protocols precisely.
  • Excellent organizational habits and reliable, structured record-keeping.
  • Comfortable working hands-on with chemicals and laboratory equipment.
  • A collaborative attitude and an eagerness to learn from scientists and senior team members.
  • Ability to work onsite 5 days a week in a lab environment.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and safely lift/move lab materials (up to 30 lbs).

Nice to Have
  • Any prior lab experience, whether formal or informal (school chemistry labs, maker spaces, or hands-on hobby projects).
  • Familiarity with basic lab safety practices (GHS labeling, Safety Data Sheets [SDS], and PPE).
  • Prior exposure to or hobbyist experience with 3D printing.
