I.  Title: TRADES HELPER I & II

II. Job Summary:

Performs semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and grounds work to support District facilities, equipment, and building systems under the direction of maintenance leadership.

III. Reports To:

Maintenance Lead or designee.

IV. Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED preferred.

• Valid driver's license.

• Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, light automotive equipment, simple machines, and maintenance equipment.

• Basic computer or mobile-device skills to enter work-order notes, upload photos, document work, and submit receipts or job information.

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and more than 50 pounds with proper body mechanics and assistance.

• Level II placement requires the experience and demonstrated independence described above.

V. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties listed below are representative of the position and do not include every task that may be assigned.

• Assists journey-level or master-level trades workers with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, carpentry, painting, grounds, and general building maintenance work.

• Performs assigned preventive maintenance, including inspections, filter replacement, basic troubleshooting, drain and fixture checks, cooling-tower support, coil cleaning support, and other routine maintenance tasks.

• Completes minor repairs, installations, painting, furniture assembly, equipment moves, event set-ups, shelving, partitions, trash and debris cleanup, and other general maintenance assignments.

• Assists with plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and building-system components, including fixtures, switches, outlets, lamps, ballasts, sockets, drains, toilets, faucets, bathroom fixtures, appliances, and similar items within assigned authority.

• Performs basic rough and finish carpentry and surface preparation, including work on doors, partitions, walls, fences, window frames, shelves, furniture, and other facility components.

• Supports grounds, sprinkler-system, pest-management, and site-maintenance work as assigned.

• Maintains clean, safe, and orderly work areas and follows OSHA requirements, District policies, safety procedures, and required training.

• Provides courteous service to staff, students, visitors, contractors, and team members.

• Documents assigned work in District or vendor systems, including notes, photos, receipts, and information needed for closeout, billing, or reimbursement.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

VI. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Basic knowledge of maintenance practices related to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, grounds, sprinkler systems, and general facility support.

• Ability to follow directions, work safely, use personal protective equipment, and apply proper lifting techniques.

• Ability to communicate clearly, use basic math, pay attention to detail, and complete assigned work accurately.

• Ability to work from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other approved equipment when required.

• For Level II, ability to apply prior experience to complete routine assignments with less direct supervision, identify problems early, and assist with training or guiding less-experienced helpers when assigned.

VII. Terms of Employment:

This position is scheduled for 8 hours per day, 254 days per year. Monday through Friday is considered to be the normal workweek. Emergency conditions may arise which will require attention at any hour of the day or night. Benefits will be in accordance with approved Board policy. Wages will be in accordance with the Classified Salary Schedule:

Trades Helper I Grade 8 ($20.07)

-Entry-level or developing semi-skilled worker. Requires general work experience using tools, completion of related vocational training, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Trades Helper II Grade 9 ($21.32)

-Experienced semi-skilled worker. Requires at least two years of relevant experience in construction, commercial building maintenance, property maintenance, grounds, or a related skilled-trade environment, and demonstrated ability to complete assigned work with greater independence and accuracy.

This is an "at will" position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time, or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The "employment at will" policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees of District 91.

VIII. Evaluation

Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Maintenance Lead in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on the evaluation of classified personnel.

This position has been given an overall physical classification of heavy duty.
