What is a mainframe?

Mainframes are powerful computers used mainly by large organizations for critical applications, bulk data processing, large-scale transaction processing, and enterprise resource planning. They are known for their reliability, scalability, and security, making them essential for industries like banking, healthcare, and government. Mainframes can handle thousands of users and transactions simultaneously, supporting the core operations of many businesses.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mainframe developer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mainframe Developer, a strong background in COBOL, JCL, mainframe operating systems (like z/OS), and database management is essential, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as IBM DB2, CICS, VSAM, and mainframe version control systems is typically required, and certifications like IBM Certified System Programmer can be advantageous. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills for identifying issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure reliable maintenance, development, and modernization of mission-critical legacy systems that support large-scale business operations.

What are some typical challenges faced by mainframe professionals when integrating legacy systems with modern technologies?

Mainframe professionals often encounter challenges when integrating legacy systems with newer technologies, such as ensuring data compatibility, managing security protocols, and minimizing downtime during migration. These tasks require a deep understanding of both the existing mainframe architecture and the modern platforms being introduced. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including application developers, security specialists, and project managers—is essential to ensure seamless integration and to address potential issues proactively. Staying updated on the latest integration tools and best practices also helps in overcoming these challenges efficiently.

Job description

Our Order Management System (OMS) sits at the heart of how we fulfill orders across eCommerce and in-store channels - processing millions of orders annually and growing. We're looking for a Quality Engineering who can own the full testing lifecycle for a system at this scale: from designing automation frameworks to validating complex integrations with legacy enterprise systems like Mainframe, Talend, and EDI.
This is a hands-on technical role. You'll set QA strategy, build and extend automation, and drive release confidence across both greenfield OMS features and brownfield integrations. You'll work closely with developers and product owners in an environment that moves fast and embraces AI-augmented development workflows.
Responsibilities
Release Quality and Test Strategy
- Own end-to-end testing for OMS releases including regression, integration and SIT; define quality gates aligned with business and technical requirements
- Partner with developers, product owners, and business analysts to shape requirements, define acceptance criteria, and embed quality early in the development lifecycle
- Lead defect triage, root-cause analysis, and quality reporting; build dashboards and KPIs that give the team and stakeholders clear visibility into release readiness and system health
Automation and CI/CD
- Design, build, and maintain scalable automation frameworks using Java, Rest Assured, Selenium, Playwright, and Cucumber/Gherkin
- Integrate test automation into GitLab CI/CD pipelines to shift regression detection earlier in the release cycle
- Own test data strategy and continuously raise the bar on automation coverage, standards, and reusability across the OMS platform
Integration and System Validation
- Validate end-to-end order flows across order capture, payment, inventory, routing, fulfillment orchestration, and post-purchase updates
- Test integrations with legacy enterprise systems including Mainframe, Talend, and EDI; validate event-driven processing to ensure reliable downstream order handling
- Evaluate and adopt new testing tools and automation accelerators as the platform scales
Qualifications
Experience
- 5+ years in Quality Engineering, software testing, and test automation
- Experience validating integrations with legacy systems (Mainframe, Talend, or EDI) and event-driven architectures (Kafka or similar messaging systems)
- Comfortable working across both greenfield applications and brownfield systems with existing integration complexity
- Background in Agile/DevOps environments supporting large-scale enterprise implementations
Technical Skills
- Strong Java and REST API skills; hands-on experience with Maven, JSON, Git, and SQL
- Solid understanding of Spring application architecture - enough to design effective test strategies against Spring-based services
- Automation depth across Selenium, Playwright, Rest Assured, Postman, and Cucumber/Gherkin
- Experience building CI/CD-integrated test pipelines using GitLab
- Proficient with JIRA-based quality reporting, API testing, and test data management
- Experience in cloud-native environments; GCP experience preferred
- Comfortable using AI tools to accelerate testing workflows - from test generation to coverage analysis
Domain Knowledge
- Strong grasp of order management fundamentals: order capture, payment validation, inventory checks, routing logic, ship groups, and fulfillment orchestration
- Experience in retail or digital commerce, particularly OMS-to-Fulfillment Center integrations
- Familiarity with enterprise integration patterns and compliance standards
Bonus Points
- ISTQB certification
- Advanced knowledge of OMS routing and fulfillment logic
- Experience testing AI/ML-powered systems or pipelines
