Job DescriptionJob Summary

The Integrated Card Systems (ICS) team supports the core credit card processing platform for Consumer and Small Business customers, partnering closely with the Payments business line. ICS is the system of record for credit card accounts, supporting multiple products and networks in a highly regulated, alwayson environment.

As a Software Engineering Director, you will lead a large engineering organization responsible for the stability, resiliency, and modernization of critical card processing platforms. You will lead managers and senior engineers within a blended workforce of employees and contractors, owning delivery outcomes across mainframe and Javabased systems.

This role combines people leadership, technical oversight, and execution at scale. You will balance platform stability and incident leadership with delivery of large initiatives and a multiyear modernization roadmap. Handson coding is not required, but strong technical judgment is essential to guide teams, make sound design decisions, and ensure reliable, highquality solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead an engineering organization of approximately 40-60 engineers and contractors, including engineering managers, with accountability for staffing, performance, and delivery outcomes.
  • Own operational and delivery results for missioncritical platforms, with a strong focus on stability, resiliency, availability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide technical leadership across mainframe and distributed systems, supporting teams during complex delivery challenges, production incidents, and escalations.
  • Drive execution of large, highvisibility initiatives, ensuring predictable delivery, transparency, and effective risk management across competing priorities.
  • Lead and advance modernization efforts, including modernization on or off the mainframe, while maintaining uninterrupted business operations.
  • Strengthen engineering practices through sound design decisions, quality standards, and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Develop and coach engineering managers and senior engineers, with a focus on career development, upskilling, and succession planning.
  • Build strong partnerships with product, architecture, operations, and business leaders to align technology delivery with business priorities.
  • Champion agile and productoriented delivery models while maintaining accountability for results.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience
  • Eight or more years of relevant software engineering experience
  • Five or more years of experience leading software engineering teams
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Mainframe and Java Technologies: Strong knowledge of mainframe environments and Javabased applications; familiarity with COBOL and Java is essential.
  • Modernization Experience: Experience leading platform modernization initiatives; cloud experience is beneficial but not required.
  • Data Integration and APIs: Experience integrating and supporting large volumes of data through APIs and middleware; familiarity with technologies such as Tibco and Spring Boot is a plus.
  • System Ownership: Proven ability to own and operate critical platforms with accountability for reliability, performance, and delivery outcomes.
  • Operational Leadership: Experience with incident management and production support in largescale, regulated environments.
  • People Leadership: Demonstrated success developing managers and building highperforming, engaged teams.
  • Domain Experience: Experience in credit cards, payments, or other regulated financial systems is strongly preferred.
  • Delivery at Scale: Experience leading blended onshore/offshore teams and vendor partnerships.
Location Expectations

This role requires working from a posted U.S. Bank locations three (3) or more days per week.

The salary range reflects figures based on the primary location, which is listed first. The actual range for the role may differ based on the location of the role. In addition to salary, U.S. Bank offers a comprehensive benefits package, including incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase 401(k) contribution and pension (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). Pay Range: $143,905.00 - $169,300.00
