What Does a Remote Mainframe Developer Do?

As a remote mainframe developer, you work from home to design, code, test, and configure software and applications used on a mainframe system. Mainframes are large computers with particularly high processing power and are often used for critical tasks like bulk data processing or enterprise resource planning. In this role, you may help ensure all new software is fully backward-compatible, monitor system performance, isolate errors, and work collaboratively with other developers as needed. Most mainframe developers work for larger companies. As a remote employee, you use virtual office software, phone, chat, or email to remain connected to other employees.

How much do mainframe programmers make?

Mainframe programmers typically earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and certifications. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in COBOL, JCL, or mainframe tools can command higher salaries, especially in industries like finance and government. Remote positions may also influence compensation levels.

Is mainframe still in demand?

Mainframe developers are still in demand due to the continued reliance of many large organizations on legacy systems for critical operations. Skills in COBOL, JCL, and mainframe environments remain valuable, especially in finance, insurance, and government sectors where mainframes handle high-volume transactions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Mainframe Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Mainframe Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like COBOL, JCL, and experience with mainframe operating systems, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools such as IBM z/OS, DB2, CICS, and version control systems is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Excellent problem-solving abilities, independent work ethic, and effective virtual communication are standout soft skills for this remote role. These skills ensure smooth maintenance, modernization, and support of critical legacy systems in distributed teams.

Can mainframe be replaced by AI?

Mainframe developers work with large-scale, legacy systems that require specialized knowledge of mainframe environments, programming languages, and security protocols. While AI can automate certain tasks like code analysis and testing, it is unlikely to fully replace the need for skilled mainframe developers who manage complex, mission-critical systems. Instead, AI tools are increasingly used to augment their work and improve efficiency.

Does mainframe need coding?

Yes, mainframe developers typically need coding skills in languages such as COBOL, PL/I, or Assembler to create, maintain, and update mainframe applications. Proficiency in these languages is essential for working effectively in mainframe environments and often includes understanding of tools like JCL and DB2. Coding is a core part of mainframe development roles.

How does a Remote Mainframe Developer typically collaborate with on-site teams and manage communication challenges?

As a Remote Mainframe Developer, you'll often work closely with on-site IT teams, business analysts, and project managers through virtual meetings, chat platforms, and shared documentation tools. Effective communication is key, so regular check-ins and proactive status updates help ensure alignment on project goals and troubleshooting efforts. Many companies use agile methodologies, which means you'll likely participate in daily stand-ups and sprint planning sessions remotely. While time zone differences can be a challenge, flexible scheduling and clear communication protocols are common strategies to keep everyone connected and productive.

Job description

It's fun to work in a company where people truly BELIEVE in what they're doing!

Job Description Summary:

We are seeking an accomplished Senior Software Engineer with deep expertise in IBM IMS™ Transaction Manager (TM) and Database (DB) application programming to drive the evolution of our IMS compatible technologies within our Enterprise modernization platform. This role is ideal for someone who has spent years building, maintaining, or optimizing IMS based applications on the mainframe and now wants to bring that domain knowledge into next generation tooling, runtimes, and replatforming solutions.

As a senior software engineer, you will provide architectural leadership, guide design of IMS compatible features, and translate complex mainframe concepts into a robust, performant implementation for distributed and cloud-based environments.

This role sits at the heart of our mission to modernize long-established, mission‑critical enterprise applications and to deliver stable, high-performance infrastructure relied on by global enterprises.

Architect & Build IMS TM/DB-Compatible Technologies

  • Contribute to the design and development of key components that replicate or extend IMS TM and DB behaviors—including message handling, transaction scheduling, PSB/DBD structures, DL/I call compatibility, and hierarchical database semantics.

  • Define and evolve architectural direction for our IMS replatforming runtime, ensuring parity with core IMS concepts where required and embracing modernization opportunities where beneficial.

  • Translate IMS internals and application programming patterns into scalable, reliable components on distributed systems.

Apply Deep IMS Domain Expertise

  • Model real-world IMS application scenarios (batch and online) within our modernization stack.

  • Provide authoritative guidance on IMS constructs such as:

  • Message queues, scheduling, and transaction regions

  • DBD/PSB design and access paths

  • DL/I call flows, PCB handling, segment structure, and hierarchical locking

  • IMS batch processing interactions with TM and DB

  • Partner with product and engineering leadership to ensure features meet enterprise-grade reliability and performance expectations.

Technical Leadership

  • Contribute to cross-team engineering initiatives that impact compilers, runtimes, integration layers, and interoperability features.

  • Mentor engineers across teams, helping them understand IMS fundamentals and how those concepts should surface in our implementation.

  • Conduct deep technical reviews, troubleshoot complex runtime compatibility issues, and guide performance tuning strategies.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Influence product roadmap decisions related to IMS replatforming, compatibility, and modernization.

  • Engage with customers, field engineering, and support teams to understand real‑world IMS workloads and migration scenarios.

What We’re Looking For

Required Experience

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering, including senior‑level ownership of complex system-level components.

  • Direct hands-on experience developing or maintaining IMS TM and DB applications on IBM z/OS (essential).

  • Deep knowledge of:
