Mainframe Systems Engineer (z/OS)
Position Description
This role is responsible for building, maintaining, and optimizing enterprise IT infrastructure across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments to support internal business operations. The position focuses on enterprise server technologies, including IBM mainframe platforms, while ensuring system reliability, performance, security, scalability, and operational efficiency.
The engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to support capacity planning, resource optimization, infrastructure automation, virtualization, monitoring, disaster recovery, and enterprise software solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Design & Operations
  • Design, operate, and maintain enterprise server environments, including:
    • IBM Mainframe systems (LPARs)
    • High-performance computing environments
    • Hybrid and cloud infrastructure platforms
  • Ensure infrastructure performance, availability, and reliability to support business operations.
Enterprise Solutions Engineering
  • Research, design, implement, and maintain complex infrastructure solutions, including:
    • Identity and Access Management (IAM)
    • Data warehouses
    • Event processing frameworks
    • Containerized environments
    • Auto-scaling and on-demand resource solutions
    • Specialty enterprise software platforms
Virtualization & Storage
  • Design and configure secure virtualized environments aligned with enterprise architecture standards.
  • Manage virtual machines, virtual networking, and distributed storage platforms, including SAN, HDFS, SSD, and related technologies.
Monitoring & Performance Optimization
  • Utilize enterprise monitoring tools and assist in developing custom monitoring solutions.
  • Ensure systems are properly configured, operating efficiently, and protected against security threats.
  • Monitor CPU, memory, storage, and network utilization to optimize performance and control costs.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and recommend improvements.
Capacity Planning
  • Analyze resource utilization trends and forecast future infrastructure requirements.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to enterprise architecture teams to support long-term technology planning.

Security & Compliance
  • Knowledge of corporate security standards, control policies, procedures, and governance requirements.
  • Experience with RACF, including profile creation, administration, and analysis.
Disaster Recovery
  • Experience supporting Disaster Recovery planning, implementation, testing, and execution within z/OS environments.
Technical Support
  • Provide Level 1, 2, and 3 support for software and hardware incidents.
  • Interface directly with IBM Technical Support and utilize IBM ServiceLink to troubleshoot operating system and hardware issues.
Development Experience
  • Strong proficiency in:
    • Assembler
    • REXX
    • CLIST
  • SAS programming experience highly desired.
Mainframe Hardware Support
  • Support installation, configuration, upgrades, and maintenance of mainframe hardware environments.
Additional Qualifications
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience with Microsoft PowerPoint, Access, and Project is highly desirable.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Install, customize, test, implement, document, and support ISV products, including site-specific modifications and enhancements.
  • Develop, test, implement, document, and support system modifications using Assembler and MVS/JES exits.
  • Analyze, debug, and resolve z/OS software issues.
  • Support z/OS Unix System Services (USS) and WebSphere environments.
  • Participate in Disaster Recovery planning and testing activities.
  • Provide after-hours support as needed.
Work Schedule & Support Requirements
  • Remote position.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and rotating on-call schedules.
  • Must be able to provide 24x7x365 rotational support for critical software and system issues.
