Job description

Job Summary

Based in St.Louis, Core&Main is a leader in advancing reliable infrastructure with local service nationwide. This role focuses on supporting large‑scale water, wastewater, and critical infrastructure projects specializing in treatment plants. The Outside Sales Representative builds and maintains strong relationships with municipalities, engineers, and contractors engaged in major civil and mechanical infrastructure work. The position requires significant field engagement, technical aptitude, and the ability to manage complex project scopes from pre‑bid design through delivery. The role also requires operation of a company vehicle or a personal vehicle, performed consistently more than 20% of the average work week, and a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) is required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Project & Scope Management: Manage project workloads for treatment plant and critical infrastructure projects, present customer‑provided material lists, complete bill‑of‑materials packages, and coordinate multi‑stage shipments to align with construction schedules.
  • Technical Expertise & Solution Support: Apply strong knowledge of water, wastewater, and civil/mechanical processes; support customers with product recommendations, technical clarifications, and system‑level solutions; maintain expertise in core product categories such as PVF, HDPE, fusion equipment, operators, actuators, and related plant components.
  • Quotation & Drafting Collaboration: Partner with internal quotation, estimating, and pre‑bid manager teams on plant‑specific scopes, detailed infrastructure material takeoffs, and design‑build support packages to ensure customers receive accurate, comprehensive, and timely proposals.
  • Business Development & Market Expansion: Identify new opportunities across water, wastewater, and municipal ecosystems; develop relationships with engineering firms, public agencies, and major developers; attend industry events, associations, and trade shows; conduct market research to identify growth opportunities within the region.
  • Customer Relationship Management: Serve as the primary point of contact for plant‑related and infrastructure accounts; maintain deep, consultative relationships that drive long‑term loyalty; act as a trusted resource for technical guidance, product sourcing, and project planning.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of industry‑related outside sales experience (waterworks, civil, mechanical, or distribution).
  • Experience supporting large infrastructure or plant environments (water/wastewater treatment and industrial civil projects).
  • Strong technical aptitude; engineering background (especially civil) is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specs, material lists, and engineered designs.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex scopes and multi‑phase projects.
  • A strong determination to be a successful outside sales representative.
Environmental Job Requirements

Position typically requires exposure to temperature extremes, moving machinery, loud noises, and fumes, which may cause noticeable discomfort. Overnight travel may be required more than 50% of the time.
