Position Summary:
The part-time shop assistant will support the Mechanical Engineering department lab managers in The College of Engineering. The shop assistant will perform general maintenance, move furniture, set up and break down rooms, and/or organize lab spaces to prepare for the upcoming academic year.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • 35% Support the relocation of lab equipment, supplies, and furniture.
  • 30% Assist with the setup and organization of engineering laboratories.
  • 30% Help inventory, stock, and organize supplies, tools, and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:
Formal Education
- High school graduate

- Good communication and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
a.) Tools, machinery and equipment used:
  • Hand tools such as screw drivers and hammer.
  • Power tools such as electric drill.

b.) Environmental conditions: (any unusual/adverse conditions such as exposure to chemicals, noise, illumination, air quality, weather exposure etc.):
  • Work is sometimes required in an active machine shop with noise from machinery.
  • Protective eye wear will be required in the machine shop.
  • Work in labs may sometimes require a lab coat and safety glasses.

c.) Physical requirements: (items such as lifting, pushing, pulling, standing or sitting for extended periods of time, manual dexterity, walking etc.):
  • The ability to perform physical tasks associated with the position, including lifting, moving, and transporting furniture, equipment, and other objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods as needed.
