What are the main duties of a machine shop assistant?

A Machine Shop Assistant supports machinists and technicians by preparing materials, operating basic machinery, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and organizing the workspace. They often assist with loading and unloading materials, measuring parts, and ensuring that tools and machines are in good working order. These assistants play a vital role in keeping the shop running smoothly and efficiently, often performing routine tasks so skilled machinists can focus on more complex work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine shop assistant?

To thrive as a Machine Shop Assistant, you need a basic understanding of machining processes, mechanical aptitude, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand tools, measuring instruments like calipers and micrometers, and sometimes CNC machinery or safety certifications is typical. Attention to detail, reliability, and strong teamwork skills help you excel in supporting machinists and maintaining workflow. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient operations and contribute to producing high-quality machined parts.

What are some common challenges faced by a machine shop assistant, and how can they be managed effectively?

Machine Shop Assistants often face challenges such as maintaining strict safety protocols while working around heavy machinery, managing multiple tasks like material handling and equipment cleaning, and adapting to varying production schedules. Effective time management and consistent communication with machinists and supervisors can help address these challenges. Additionally, staying organized and proactive in identifying potential hazards contributes to a safer and more efficient workplace.

What is the difference between Machine Shop Assistant vs Machinist?

Job description

Tool Setter / Presetter
Location: Woodbridge, ON
Schedule: Day Shift, Monday–Friday
Pay: $21.00–$25.00/hour
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Build Your Career in CNC & Precision Manufacturing

We are currently hiring a Tool Setter / Presetter to join a growing precision manufacturing operation in Woodbridge.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with 1–3 years of CNC machining, tool crib, or machine shop experience who wants to develop their technical skills and grow into a specialized tooling position.

You do not need to be a senior machinist or experienced CNC programmer. If you understand basic CNC tooling, are mechanically inclined, highly organized, and eager to learn, this could be a great next step.

What You'll Be Doing
As the Tool Setter / Presetter, you will support CNC production by making sure machinists have the correct tooling, holders, inserts, fixtures, and gauges prepared and ready before jobs hit the machines.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Gather and prepare cutting tools, holders, inserts, fixtures, and gauges for upcoming CNC jobs
  • Review setup sheets, tooling sheets, job travelers, and tooling lists
  • Assemble cutting tools and tool holders
  • Measure and preset tooling for CNC production
  • Set and verify tool offsets
  • Inspect cutting tools and holders for wear, damage, or replacement requirements
  • Stage tooling so CNC operators have everything required before machine setups begin
  • Maintain a clean, accurate, and organized tool crib/tooling area
  • Properly identify, label, and store tooling and components
  • Monitor tooling inventory and identify shortages
  • Communicate when inserts, cutting tools, holders, or other consumables need replenishment
  • Work closely with CNC Operators, Set-Up Technicians, Programmers, and Production Supervisors
  • Assist with CNC machine setup and tooling requirements as needed
  • Help reduce machine downtime by ensuring tooling is prepared correctly and on time
  • Participate in shop organization and continuous improvement initiatives
What We're Looking For
  • Approximately 1–3 years of experience in a CNC machine shop, tool crib, precision manufacturing, or similar environment
  • Familiarity with CNC cutting tools, inserts, holders, fixtures, and/or gauges
  • Basic understanding of CNC machining terminology and processes
  • Comfortable using basic precision measuring equipment
  • Ability to read and follow setup sheets, tooling lists, job travelers, and technical instructions
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Excellent attention to detail and organization
  • Comfortable working with small, high-precision components
  • Reliable, hands-on, and proactive
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Willingness to learn and develop deeper CNC tooling knowledge
Experience That Would Be an Asset
  • Tool crib or tooling support experience
  • CNC machine operation
  • CNC setup assistance
  • Tool presetting or tool offset experience
  • Machinist apprenticeship or junior machinist experience
  • Aerospace, defence, tool & die, mold, medical device, or other high-precision manufacturing experience
  • Experience in a custom/jobbing CNC machine shop
Why This Opportunity?
This is a newly created position, giving you the opportunity to grow with the role rather than stepping into an established routine.
The company is specifically looking for someone with strong fundamentals who can be trained and developed into the Tool Setter / Presetter function.

For a junior CNC Operator, Machinist Apprentice, Tool Crib Technician, or Machine Shop Assistant, this is an opportunity to build specialized knowledge in cutting tools, tool assembly, presetting, offsets, CNC setups, and precision manufacturing while working alongside experienced machining professionals.

Schedule
Monday–Thursday: 8:00 AM–4:30 PM
Friday: 7:00 AM–3:30 PM

Compensation
$21.00–$25.00 per hour, based on previous CNC machining, tooling, and manufacturing experience.

If you have experience in a CNC machine shop and are looking for an opportunity to develop your skills in tooling and precision manufacturing, apply today!
