Job description

Metglas, Inc., located in Conway, SC near Myrtle Beach, is a world leading producer of Amorphous Metal Ribbon. Since our company began in the 1970โ€™s, Metglas, Inc. (then Allied Signal located in Morristown, NJ) pioneered the development and production of amorphous metal, a unique alloy that exhibits a structure in which the metal atoms occur in a random pattern. The key to Metglas Inc.โ€™s proprietary manufacturing process is the rapid-solidification of molten alloy at a rate of approximately one million degrees Celsius per second.

We are currently hiring for Operator Repair (Melting, Casting) responsible for supporting amorphous metal casting operations by staging charge buckets of raw materials, charging the melting furnace, preparing & adding raw materials to the melting furnace, monitoring, deslagging, and sampling melt, and addressing melt issues, as needed.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Unload delivery trucks, move raw materials from inventory, and load charge buckets using forklift and/or crane
  • Use computer system to enter and verify batch composition (i.e. alloy)
  • Charge the melting furnace, adding charge buckets of raw materials using crane with hook and lifting magnet
  • Monitor, take samples, and fine-tune melt chemistry
  • Initiate pouring of molten metal into and back-pouring of melt out of holding furnace
  • Address possible melt issues, including clogged pour spout, out-of-calibration lance, routine deslagging, and possible furnace over-heating, as needed
  • Assist with changing spout, removing & replacing wheel house, emergency operations, and periodic breakdown/rebuilding of furnace (approximately every six months), which includes using jackhammers, lifting/carrying refractory brick, and working in confined spaces and at heights
  • Raking and clean up of scrap and other ribbon from floors, machinery, and other work areas.
  • Cleaning of work areas as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Note: This position supports both continuous and batch casting amorphous metal production lines

Skills & Requirements:

  • Safety mindset is your #1 priority!
  • Able and willing to wear proper safety attire (PPE: glasses, gloves, helmet, earplugs, steel toed boots, silver jacket, long sleeves and pants, etc.)
  • Ability to read and understand measurements and directions
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude
  • Basic computer skills: ability to enter, retrieve, and evaluate data
  • 2+ years Forklift experience
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • 2+ years prior industrial/mechanical experience
  • Prior work experience operating an overhead crane preferred
  • Prior use of micrometer preferred
  • Prior experience with feeler gauges and setting gaps preferred
  • Able to lift, push, and pull up to 50lbs alone, and 51-100lbs with assistance
  • Able to regularly perform work in areas of height up to 3 stories on safe and stable platforms
  • Able and willing to work in a warm & hot inside environment, especially during summer months
  • Must be clean shaven at all times to be able to wear a respirator when/if/as needed so that a respirator will seal around your mouth and nose
  • Able to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays per rotation schedule
  • Able to work 12.15--hour rotating shifts
  • Shifts run 6:45a-7p, and 6:45p-7a
  • Rotation schedule is 2 days on, 2 days off, 3 days on, 2 days off, 2 days on 3 days off on one shift (6:45a-7pm or 6:45p-7a) for 2 weeks, then the same on the opposing shift
  • Able to work overtime when/if/as needed. Time and a half pay after 40 hours/week
