AspectLow Voltage DesignElectrical Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in electrical engineering or related field, with certifications in low voltage systemsUsually holds a diploma or technical certification in electrical technology
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, construction sites, client meetingsOn-site installation, maintenance, troubleshooting
Industry UsageUsed in designing security, fire alarm, data, and communication systemsInvolved in installing and maintaining electrical systems, including low voltage wiring

Low Voltage Design professionals focus on creating plans for low voltage systems, while Electrical Technicians implement and maintain these systems on-site. Both roles are essential in the electrical industry but differ in responsibilities and work settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Low Voltage Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Low Voltage Designer, you need a solid understanding of electrical systems, codes, and standards, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or related field and relevant experience. Familiarity with CAD software, Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools, and certifications like BICSI or NICET are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills help ensure precise designs and smooth collaboration with project teams. These skills are essential for creating safe, compliant, and efficient low voltage systems in commercial and residential projects.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in Low Voltage Design, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Low Voltage Design often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple stakeholders (architects, contractors, IT teams), keeping up with rapidly evolving technology standards, and ensuring compliance with local codes and regulations. Addressing these challenges requires strong communication skills, continuous learning, and meticulous documentation to align all parties and avoid misinterpretations. Proactively engaging in project meetings and staying updated on industry best practices can help ensure that designs are both compliant and adaptable to client needs.

What is low voltage design?

Low voltage design refers to the planning and implementation of electrical systems that operate at lower voltages, typically under 50 volts AC or 120 volts DC. This includes systems such as security alarms, data networks, audio/visual equipment, and building automation. Low voltage designers are responsible for creating safe, efficient, and code-compliant layouts for wiring and devices, ensuring seamless integration with other building systems. Their work is essential in modern construction, where technology and connectivity are crucial.

Job description

Technology Project Manager (Low Voltage / ICT Design)

๐Ÿ“ Inland Empire, CA (Hybrid)

$90K โ€“ $120K + Bonus + Full Benefits

Why this role stands out

If youโ€™re a hands-on ICT / low voltage designer who wants to step further into project ownership โ€” without losing the technical side โ€” this role hits the sweet spot.

Youโ€™ll join a growing, multidisciplinary engineering firm where project managers are still deeply involved in design, decisions, and execution โ€” not stuck in meetings all day.

This is a place where:

  • Youโ€™ll own projects end-to-end
  • Still work in Revit/CAD regularly
  • And mentor junior designers while growing your leadership impact

What youโ€™ll be doing

Youโ€™ll lead the design and delivery of low voltage / technology systems across commercial, municipal, and education projects.

Your day-to-day:
  • Design and coordinate:
    • Structured cabling / telecom systems
    • Security (access control, CCTV)
    • AV and network systems
    • Produce:
      • Revit / AutoCAD drawings
      • Construction documents
      • Division 27/28 specifications
      • Manage projects from:
        • Schematic Design โ†’ Construction Documents โ†’ Construction Administration
        • Collaborate with:
          • Clients, architects, contractors, and internal teams
          • Handle:
            • RFIs and submittals
            • Site visits and field coordination
            • Lead:
              • Small design teams (typically 1โ€“2 designers)

๐Ÿ‘‰ Youโ€™ll be both technical contributor and project lead โ€” not one or the other.

              What you bringMust-have experience:
              • 5+ years in ICT / low voltage / telecom system design
              • Strong experience in:
                • Revit and/or AutoCAD
                • Hands-on design experience with:
                  • Structured cabling
                  • Security systems
                  • AV or network systems
                  • Experience producing:
                    • Construction documents
                    • Specifications (Div 27/28 a big plus)
                    • Ability to:
                      • Manage multiple projects
                      • Work cross-functionally with design teams and clients

                      Nice-to-have (highly valued):
                      • RCDD certification
                      • BICSI, CTS, or similar credentials
                      • Experience with WiFi, DAS, or cellular systems
                      • EIT or PE (not required)
                      • Bluebeam experience

                      Work environment
                      • Hybrid schedule:
                        • ~2โ€“3 days in office
                        • ~2โ€“3 days remote
                        • Based in San Bernardino / Inland Empire
                        • Small, collaborative teams
                        • High visibility across projects

                        Growth & culture

                        This firm is known for:

                        • Strong mentorship & development
                        • A people-first, low-ego culture
                        • Real ownership early in your career
                        • Exposure to diverse projects:
                          • K-12
                          • Municipal
                          • Healthcare
                          • Commercial

You wonโ€™t get siloed โ€” youโ€™ll build real project experience fast.

                          Compensation & benefits
                          • $90,000 โ€“ $120,000 base (flexible for strong candidates)
                          • Bonus opportunities (2x/year)
                          • 100% employee health coverage
                          • Dental, vision, 401(k), PTO, and more

                          What this role is NOT
                          • Not a โ€œpaper PMโ€ role
                          • Not heavy business development
                          • Not IT/network-only (must be design-focused)

Quick gut check โ€” this role is for you if:

โœ” You still enjoy being in Revit/CAD

โœ” You want more ownership over projects

โœ” You donโ€™t want to move away from technical work
