What does a Looker Developer do, especially in a part-time role?

A Looker Developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining data models and dashboards within the Looker business intelligence platform. In a part-time capacity, their work typically focuses on collaborating with teams to understand data needs, creating interactive reports, and optimizing data workflows for efficient reporting. They use LookML (Looker's modeling language) to define how data is structured and accessed, ensuring that stakeholders can easily extract valuable insights. Part-time Looker Developers often balance their time across multiple projects or clients, providing flexible but specialized analytics support.

As a part-time Looker Developer, you will often work closely with data analysts, business stakeholders, and IT teams to understand reporting requirements and translate them into actionable Looker dashboards and data models. Communication and time management are key, as you may need to coordinate meetings and updates within limited working hours. Despite the part-time schedule, you're expected to maintain clear documentation and ensure your solutions are scalable and easy for others to use. Regular check-ins and leveraging collaboration tools like Slack or Jira help keep projects moving smoothly, even with a distributed or flexible team structure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Looker Developer (Part Time), and why are they important?

To excel as a Looker Developer, you need a solid understanding of data modeling, SQL, and business intelligence concepts, typically supported by experience with Looker and a background in computer science or analytics. Familiarity with LookML, data visualization tools, and cloud data warehouses like BigQuery or Redshift is commonly required, along with Looker certifications being advantageous. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with stakeholders and translating business needs into actionable insights. These competencies ensure the delivery of accurate, insightful dashboards and reports that drive data-informed decision-making in organizations.
