Job description

Bus Driver

Selection for interview is based on evaluation of complete application file. Employment offer is based on employee evaluations, discipline history and attendance records, training and experience, references, and interview results. Hourly rate placement contingent upon verification of related WA public school experience.

This position is included in the classified staff non-supervisory bargaining unit. Union shop requirements and the Collective Bargaining Agreement apply to this position.

Employment contingent upon completion and verification of form information and background check with fee to be paid by applicant.

Pay for contracted classified employees is distributed once/month on the last business day of the month. Pay for employees who work less than full year is spread through August. Questions concerning pay processes may be directed to the Personnel Office.

Eligibility for SEBB medical, dental, vision, life insurance, AD&D, and LTD if anticipated to reach 630 hours in the school year. Eligibility for retirement based on 3.50 hrs/day or more for 5 or more consecutive months. Optional tax-sheltered annuities: Omni 403(b) and Deferred Compensation Plan. Personal leave, vacation leave (260-day employees only), and sick leave prorated based on FTE.

Job Description: Bus Driver

Responsible To: Supervisor of Transportation

Work Year: 180 Days Per Year

Contracts are offered through a bid process

General: Under the direction of the Transportation Supervisor, works as a Bus Driver of transportation services as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At a minimum, possess high school diploma (or equivalent).
  • Good driving record.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Current Washington State Driver's License.
  • Must hold a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with all appropriate endorsements.
  • Must hold current First Aid and CPR card.
  • No criminal history re: RCW 43.43.830 and RCW 43.43.810. WAC 392-144.
  • Previous experience driving school buses desired.
  • Drug testing required.
  • Must keep a current DOT physical.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Operates school bus; picks up and drops off students along an assigned route at designated stops. Follows time schedule. May maintain listing of students on routes; ensures that students exit vehicle at proper stop.
  • Observes traffic and remains alert to potential dangers; monitors road conditions to ensure that vehicle can be operated safely. Obeys traffic laws, provides input concerning potential hazards along the route.
  • Establishes rapport with student passengers. Monitors student behavior and enforces safety rules; disciplines students as necessary. Reports reoccurring or major student discipline problems. (May communicate with parents concerning discipline problems.)
  • Conducts daily pre and post trip inspection; check and fill fluids as needed, fuel and clean bus, secure bus at end of run.
  • Communicates concerns regarding mechanical malfunctions, potential vehicle safety hazards, schedules, etc.; provides input for department improvements.
  • Transports special needs students as assigned, including physically handicapped students. Secures students in seats. Monitors students' health condition; calls for emergency assistance as required.
  • Maintains records; completes forms and prepares reports as required by State or School District policy. Successfully completes school bus driver training programs and courses established by the State or the District.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises students while transporting them.

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Language Skills: Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers and students. Ability to read and understand maps. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Specific olfactory abilities required by this job include ability to recognize smoke, gas or other fuels, and other odors indicative of safety concerns.
