Job description

The Director of Operations is responsible for leading all warehouse and outbound logistics operations to ensure efficiency, accuracy, safety, and cost control. This role provides strategic and handsโ€‘on leadership across daily operations, labor management, inventory control, ERP system optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives while maintaining the warehouse, equipment, and grounds to support efficient operations.

The Director of Operations partners with executive leadership, carriers, and crossโ€‘functional teams to align operational performance with company objectives while ensuring the ERP system effectively supports operational processes.

Key Responsibilities Warehouse & Operations Leadership
  • Lead and oversee daily warehouse operations, including picking, packing, staging, loading, and shipping
  • Establish operational standards, workflows, and labor strategies to support outbound volume
  • Develop and track KPIs related to safety, productivity, accuracy, and onโ€‘time shipment
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimize outbound throughput and dock efficiency
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, safety regulations, and company policies
  • Manage warehouse budgets and control operating expenses
ERP Systems & Process Optimization
  • Own and continuously improve ERP system functionality as it relates to warehouse and logistics operations
  • Partner with 3rd Party Consultants and crossโ€‘functional teams to enhance system workflows, data accuracy, and reporting capabilities
  • Identify gaps in system processes and lead implementation of improvements or new functionality
  • Ensure data integrity across inventory, order processing, and shipping transactions
  • Develop and maintain standardized processes that align ERP capabilities with operational execution
  • Support ERP upgrades, testing, training, and change management initiative
  • Oversee all outbound logistics operations, including LTL, FTL, parcel, and customer pickups
  • Manage relationships with carriers, brokers, and 3PL partners
  • Negotiate freight rates and service agreements to optimize cost and service levels
  • Monitor carrier performance, onโ€‘time delivery, claims, and service issuesDevelop freight strategies to support growth, peak volume, and seasonal demand
  • Ensure accurate freight billing, auditing, and cost recovery for claims and damages
Facility & Grounds Maintenance
  • Oversee the maintenance, safety, and overall condition of the warehouse facility and grounds
  • Manage preventive maintenance programs for building systems, material handling equipment, and dock equipment
  • Coordinate repairs and maintenance with internal teams and external contractors
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal building, fire, and safety regulations
  • Manage facilityโ€‘related budgets, capital projects, and improvement initiatives
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized warehouse, dock areas, parking lots, and exterior grounds
  • Support space planning and layout changes to improve operational efficiency
  • Partner with purchasing and sales teams to ensure accurate order fulfillment
  • Oversee outbound staging, load planning, and dock scheduling
  • Ensure inventory accuracy related to outbound movements
  • Support cycle counts and physical inventories as needed
Leadership & Development
  • Lead, coach, and develop warehouse and logistics staff
  • Establish accountability through clear expectations, performance reviews, and coaching
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
Crossโ€‘Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Sales, Customer Service, Purchasing, and Accounting teams to meet customer commitments
  • Support customerโ€‘specific shipping requirements and service level agreements
  • Provide operational reporting and performance updates to executive leadership
Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Operations Management, Supply Chain, Logistics, or related field (preferred)
  • 7+ years of warehouse, distribution, or logistics experience
  • 3+ years in a senior leadership or directorโ€‘level operations role
  • Strong experience with outbound logistics, carrier management, and freight negotiation
  • Working knowledge of WMS, TMS, and freight rating systems
  • Proven ability to manage highโ€‘volume outbound shipping operations
  • Strong financial acumen and experience managing transportation costs
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problemโ€‘solving skills
  • Warehouse environment
  • Frequent presence on the warehouse floor and shipping docks
  • Flexible hours may be required to support peak shipping and carrier schedules
