Position Summary
The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the maintenance shop supporting Universal Logistics Holdings' fleet and operational equipment. This role ensures safe, efficient, and cost-effective maintenance practices while leading technicians, maintaining regulatory compliance, and supporting operational uptime across logistics and transportation services.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Maintenance
  • Manage day-to-day shop operations, including preventive maintenance, repairs, inspections, and breakdown response
  • Ensure fleet and equipment readiness to support transportation, warehousing, and logistics operations
  • Schedule and prioritize work orders to minimize downtime and maximize asset utilization
  • Oversee inventory levels, parts procurement, and vendor relationships

Leadership & People Management
  • Lead, coach, and develop maintenance technicians and support staff
  • Assign work, monitor productivity, and enforce performance standards
  • Support hiring, onboarding, training, and disciplinary actions as needed
  • Promote a positive, safety-focused, and accountable work culture

Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, OSHA, FMCSA, EPA, and company safety standards
  • Conduct and document inspections, audits, and maintenance records
  • Enforce safety protocols, PPE requirements, and housekeeping standards
  • Lead incident investigations and corrective action implementation

Financial & Administrative Management
  • Manage shop budgets, labor costs, overtime, and maintenance spend
  • Track KPIs such as cost per mile/hour, productivity, and equipment availability
  • Prepare reports related to maintenance performance and compliance
  • Approve invoices, timecards, and maintenance documentation

Continuous Improvement & Coordination
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and cost savings
  • Collaborate with Operations, Dispatch, Safety, and Corporate Maintenance teams
  • Support company initiatives, new equipment rollouts, and system implementations

Qualifications
Required
  • 5+ years of experience in fleet, transportation, or industrial maintenance
  • 2+ years in a supervisory or management role
  • Strong knowledge of diesel equipment, trailers, material handling equipment, or related assets
  • Working knowledge of DOT and OSHA regulations
  • Proficiency with maintenance management systems (CMMS) and Microsoft Office
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
